My mother still talks about how when she grew up in Anacostia (SE Wash DC) they would leave their homes and cars unlocked at night.

Sad how far we've gone in 50 years.

Sad, yes, the innocence of days gone by. I'm 51. Grew up in the 70's & even then you could go to bed at night with your window's open. Not anymore. It's such a shame.

BTW- I grew up in Va. Beach, not SOMD, but I could imagine that SOMD retained their innocence longer than VaBeach. It's one of the things that attracted me to this area. It's gone down hill since I got here 9 years ago, I guess it's inevetiable though. **sigh**

Does not compute.

Okay, lets be more specific. I was born in 1957, so I suppose you could say I 'grew up' in the 60's & the 70's.

Ages 1-10 = 1958 through 1968
Ages 11-21=1969 through 1978

I graduated from high school in 1975. Does that compute?

I guess, I am 20 years younger and always condsidered myself "growing up" in the 80's not 90's. Carry on.

There have been times when I've woken up to leave for work and saw that the front door was left unlocked or the basement sliding glass door was unlocked. Although I was like  because either I or my husband left it unlocked, I never thought I was not safe. I grew up in Northern VA and my mom's house got broken into by a former DC cop (yeah, go figure!) I think SoMD is safe (even though I live in CRE and according to some people, it's the crime capital of Calvert Co ). There are bad areas like there is everywhere but I feel safe. But on that note, just out of habit, as soon as I get out of the car, I lock it and as soon as I get through the front door, I lock it, just in case.

I got this in an e-mail this morning, thought it was interesting....

How to Lock Your Car and Why

I locked my car --- as I walked away I heard my car door unlock I went back and locked my car again three times. I looked around and there were two guys sitting in a car in the fire lane next to the store. When I looked straight at them they did not unlock my car again.

How to lock your car safely -
While traveling, my son stopped at a roadside park. He came out to his car less than 4-5 minutes later and found someone had gotten into his car, and stolen his cell phone, laptop computer, GPS navigator briefcase.....you name it...

He called the police and since there were no signs of his car being broken into - the police told him that there is a device that robbers are using now to clone your security code when you lock your doors on your car using your key-chain locking device.

They sit a distance away and watch for their next victim. They know you are going inside of the store, restaurant, or bathroom and have a few minutes to steal and run. The police officer said to manually lock your car door-by hitting the lock button inside the car, that way if there is someone sitting in a parking lot watching for their next victim it will not be you.

When you hit the lock button on your car upon exiting...it does not send the security code, but if you walk away and use the door lock on your key chain - it sends the code through the airwaves where it can be stolen. Something totally new to us...and real.

Be aware of this and please pass this note on...look how many times we all lock our doors with our remote....just to be sure we remembered to lock them...and bingo someone has our code...and whatever was in the car...can be stolen.

Snopes Approved. Please share with everyone you know.... Good information!!!

I'm guilty of that. I lock my doors manually and then use the remote as I'm walking away just to double-check to make sure it's locked. Guess I won't be doing that anymore. Thanks for the info!!!

I lock my car at night because one day I went out to my car and the drivers seat was laid back and the inside of my car smelled like someone had poured a gallon of booze in it... nothing missing so I guess some drunk needed a place to sleep it off...

Mine got broken into as well, mine was the only car locked (in the 7th) and they broke out my window and I had a music case inside (2sided) and they sat there and instead of taking the whole thing, they picked thru it and took only the ones they wanted and ramsacked my console.. little bastards.. :smack:

My car was the only car in the driveway that was locked last year when it was broken into in 7th District.
