Toddler Eating Patterns

To un-hijack :killingme

So, how is everyone sneaking vegetables to their picky eaters?

In fact... how is everyone tricking the little goobers into eating anything that has any nutritional content whatsoever?

He just turned 2.

Daycare provider says he inhales food of all varieties while there. Come dinner time at home, it's a challenge. This week chicken nugget/strip type products have been acceptable. Last week I don't think he ate any dinner all week.

Heck, I can't even get him to eat cookies. :cds: I'm about to start taking it personal.

:wootwoot alert wootwoot: Hey, Momma... this is a clue for you... 2 year olds are quite crafty at manipulating their Momma. If he is eating fine for the daycare provider you are the problem. Stop giving him choices and he will see you are no longer jumping through his hoops. If he doesn't eat much, don't sweat it.. he isn't going to starve or suffer ill consequences.

I am speaking from learning the hard way... start breaking the manipulation cycle now... while you have a good headstart.

My 5 year old HATES everything that we have at home. Yet, she'll eat the exact same thing anywhere else.

Oh, I don't jump through major hoops. He gets one shot at dinner, if he doesn't eat... then he doesn't eat. Generally he gets the same thing hubs and I have unless it's something that I KNOW he won't eat (too spicy, etc) and then I'll put together something more toddler-friendly for him. I still offer whatever we're having, but if he snubs it then too bad so sad.

Excellent... I guess I misread your post where I thought it said you were offering him cookies...

My Mom used to make separate dinners for my very picky brother. She says she regrets that....now he doesn't eat most veggies (I think he only eat green beans and lima beans), won't touch fruit....not one fruit and basically likes what comes from the freezer or a box (though she did always "cook" for him).

If my little guy becomes picky, and most children at some point do (right?), I'll continue to try serving him what we've having for dinner and if he won't eat, he can have a pb&j or a ham/cheese sammich. He won't starve but I'm not jumping though hoops.

My son eats pretty much the same as us as well. Last night he had his first taste of a soft taco, not spicy at all. He is actually the oposite, he's more picky at daycare than at home. He goes through phases though where he'll not want veggies. He used to LOVE sweet potatos, now he won't touch them. I get him with the fruit if he doesn't want the veggies. Fresh fruit everyday, greek yogurt, cheese, etc. He's 21 months and weighs 28 lbs. (makes for some nice arms). I still think we should assemble a group of toddler moms, all of us make a toddler friendly meal, enough to feed 6 or 7 children and swap so we all get our kids to try different meals each day and saves us time form making that many :buddies:

My 6 year old is the exact opposite in regards to what kids eat. He won't go near cheese, sandwiches, noodles (except for spaghetti), bread, soup, pizza, or lunch meat.

He will eat an entire bowl of spinach or kale and loves broccoli and just about any other veggie or fruit.

Not in place of dinner! :killingme His Omi makes the BEST cookies and when we go up to visit we'll offer one to him and he says "No, no, no!" while pushing it away.

More for me, I suppose.

I'd totally go for that. I'm actually really excited, in a few months when the newbie gets old enough for it I have a couple friends who are wanting to do something like that with homemade bebe food.

I always make too much food and feel bad for making him eat the same stuff over and over again. Needless to say I waste a lot right now !!

Haha, yeah, I generally only prepare for him what I'm willing to finish off myself.

Have you tried making smoothies or anything? I heard a good way to sneak in veggies was to put spinach in a home made fruit smoothie. Think I'll try that this weekend and see how it goes. Imagine my neighbors will think I'm completely nuts, though. Will have to set up the blender outside otherwise he'll flip over the noise and refuse to touch anything that might be associated with it. :killingme I need a silent blender/food processor.

See, I don't think I could get Chase to do a smoothie because of the temperature difference. I don't know. Oh and for the veggies, he LOVES green goodness. We put it in his sippy cup !!

Green goodness? Wuzzat?

I'm thinking instead of doing a smoothie with ice and whatnot I'll just do it with yogurt, make more of a fridge temperature drink. Cut it with enough water/milk so I can put it in a sippy and spare my poor, abused carpet further abuse.
