Top Democrat: Bring back the draft

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Americans would have to sign up for a new military draft after turning 18 if the incoming chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee has his way.

New York Democratic Rep. Charles Rangel said Sunday he sees his idea as a way to deter politicians from launching wars. He believes a draft would bolster U.S. troop levels that are currently insufficient to cover potential future action in Iran, North Korea and Iraq.

Wait a min, who was it who fear Bush would instate a draft........

And as far as a draft goes, no thank you.

Yeah there's two good arguments here. I personally think it would be a great way to get these thugs and gangsters off the streets. Either go into college or do something productive.

However, we all know it would be the prominent middle-class college students that would get drafted and those who conduct themselves and don't have a job, aren't in college, and so-on would remain.

It COULD be a good thing, espically if we end up aty war with Iran or Korea, but it's the feds. They'll find some way to make it hurt the low-class and middle-class.

No it won't be a good thing. The only thing a draft creates is cannon fodder. I want the people I work with to want to be there. We already have enough tools in the military, I don't need more, especially when I don't have any good tools with which to handle them. (namely wrenches). I'll take quality over quantity thank you.

They were discussing this on DC 101 this morning. But using the military to get the thugs off the streets and make them productive? Don't think so. Why give the military the job of training people that don't want to be trained. They would end up going UA/AWOL anyway and have to be hunted down by the MP's/SP. Put the gangsters in jail where they belong. On the other hand, maybe they will run to Canada to avoid the draft like they did during Vietnam. Could be a solution. :lmao:

Yeah, we already have normal kids coming out of boot with no discipline. :ohwell:
And that's due to the kinder, gentler approach to military boot camps. Go back to the old hard core ways of training. No more bleeding heart crap.

I know. I'm not saying I had it tough in 97, but these kids get 7 hours of sleep now. And there's no foul language, or physical contact.

I went through boot camp in 95......and it disgusted me when I saw all the whiners.......I meen what did they thing they were getting themselves into. I expected it to be like "Full Metal Jacket" so it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I knew it was time for me to get out, when a nasty private first class.........fresh out of school.......walked up to me....(I was an NCO at the time) and said hey whats up dude. I went off on him and told him to get his disgusting body on the ground and start pushing.........he just looked at me like I was crazy.

Old Charlie has been pushing this for a while now.

For some reason he feels that if we had a draft politicians wouldnt be so anxious to start wars. Personally I dont see how he figures that, but then who knows how the mind of a New York congresscritter works?

IMO if this is passed by a Dem Majority Congress it would be the kiss of death for Democrats in 2008. Charlie cant seem to get this off his mind , he has been harping on it for years now. Maybe its some sort of payback for his getting drafted and having to serve in Korea. If it is ,it certainly didnt hurt him and probably helped him to get elected.

From what I read, he figures that the Volunteer military is made mostly of lower middle class and poor, and a draft would grab the upper middle class and rich, and if their kids were in danger of being sent to war, congress woudl be less likely to send off the kids of their richest constituents. Of course, they all go to college anyways so not like it is going to affect them anyways. Personally, I have nothing against people being required to serve their country and get a taste of a little discipline, but it would be the kiss of death for anyone who voted for it. I guess it all depends on whether we can continue to meet recuiting goals for the different services and field the number of troops we need. At least the basis for the program is always there if we need it, I think it was Reagan who brought back Selective Service registration at least.

It was Carter that brought it back in 1980 when the Soviets went into Afghanistan

I know that this is true in the Navy and Coast Guard. At two years, the worst offenders have been weeded out, and the remaining people are just becoming productive. Now it is time to get out? With crew sizes getting smaller, the last thing the Navy needs is more untrained people.

Air Force people tell me it's the same for them. For the ground pounders, a draft made sense in the past when you just needed numbers, not trained teams. Look at the fighting being done today. These are teams of people who are trained to work together. That isn't quick, and it isn't cheap.

Yes, the military is a great way for people to learn respect and discipline, but that isn't the job of the Military. Their job is to fight and win as efficiently as possible. A draft does nothing to help the military do their job.

Yeah, and the new idea the Navy has is to send people to the ship BEFORE getting a "C" school. It would be the senior enlisted's job to both maintain the equip. and train the new chucks. Frankly I don't have time for that, it's why we have training commands. I need people coming to the ship already trained and ready to work. It's going to get real difficult in the next 5 years.

I went into boot camp a few months after graduating with my associates from a military school and was laughing at all the chicks saying "I wanna go home. This is just too hard." Boot camp was nothing compaired to the crap I endured at college but I would not change it for the world.

Couldn't remember which one did it, I just remember having to file the paperwork, not that I am old enough to remember that far back, of course :)
