"More than 1,000 dog deaths may now be linked to toxic jerky treats, according to a recent update from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The agency said that since 2007, there have been almost 5,000 complaints of pet illnesses related to the treats. The majority of the symptoms reported include gastrointestinal or liver disease, and about a third were linked to kidney and urinary disease. "

Toxic Jerky Treats Responsible For More Than 1,000 Dog Death

another story:

"Be careful what you feed your dog.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently issued another warning about toxic jerky treats, and it seems the poisonous pet snacks are still a problem.

As of May 1, more than 1,000 dogs have died as a result of the toxic treats. The FDA has received 4,800 reports of pet illnesses since 2007, 1,800 of which were submitted in the months following the agency's last warning in October 2013. Even though 25 percent of these complaints were "historic" claims -- meaning the illness occurred some time in months or years past -- the jerky products appear to be an ongoing source of sickness for both cats and dogs."

I think when the first recall was issued, I stopped buying any Jerkey Treats for my dogs. If they get Jerky, it's Human Grade. We have had dogs all our lives. Until Molly came to us, the youngest dog to die was 17 years old. We gave Molly those jerkey treats, and she died at the age of 10 years, from cancer. I have to wonder if the treats had anything to do with it? It may have been the Flea & Tick meds that did it too. Or maybe even the Immunizations given yearly.

When I got the chihuahua, we decided no treats. He's happy as a clam with a piece or two of kibble, along with some kind words, a couple of times a day.

Petco to stop selling pet treats made in China

"NEW YORK (AP) -- Petco said Tuesday that it will stop selling dog and cat treats made in China by the end of this year due to ongoing fears that the imported treats are making pets sick.

Investigators at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration haven't been able to figure out why pets are getting ill from the treats since the agency began receiving reports of illnesses in 2007."
