Tragedy in the fast lane

No.

This is morbid.

I'll tell you what I saw that I did not like. The sand pit/stop zone at the end of the track was VERY small, no way it can stop a 300+ mph dragster (as witnessed here). All they have down there to stop an errand racecar is a cachfence and a concrete barrier. Absolutely unacceptable for any dragstrip.

I'm sure there will be changes to the stop zones now, but it's too little too late.

He suffocated?? On what, his ass when it passed through his head when he hit that wall??

That crash was DEVASTATING!

Just got off the phone, and am updating the original article.

My original report was the earliest report on his death, and it was believe at that time that he suffocated (and I had talked to people in Englishtown to actually confirm his death before running the story).

The NHRA says he died of multiple injuries caused when the car slammed into the concrete wall.

I'd be willing to bed Old Bridge Township Raceway Park is not on the 2009 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series schedule.

Wrong.

MIR does have a sand pit, and its at least twice as big as Old Bridge Township Raceway Park's pitiful sandpit. And, I do believe they had foam barriers up for the IHRA race.

That is unacceptable for cars that are going much faster than 300 mph.
YOU are wrong!! I pass it everyday fool. :smack:

There is a gravel barrier maybe 75 feet long followed by a net followed by plastic barrels. A car hits this at anything close to 300mph (or 200mph) and he's going through the woods and across 234.

I have pics but dunno how to send off my phone.

The track is below 234 for one. The car is not going "across 234." :smack:

Plastic barrels is not a concrete wall, fool. :smack:

75 feet = about twice as long as 40 feet. :smack:

MIR's sandpit is well larger than 30 yards fool. :smack:

Old Bridge Township's gravel pit is 13.3 yards. So, MIR's is much bigger than NHRA sanctioned Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.

So, put that in your pipe and smoke it Mikey.

Thought it to be unusual that their run off area so short. English is over 1000 feet longer than MIR and NHRA runs faster cars with top fuel and funny car. Sad day for Calitta family.

Tragedy at Englishtown

There has been a serious accident in NHRA funny car qualifying at Englishtown. While trying to qualify into the event, Scott Kalitta's nitro funny car exploded into a ball of fire, and he has been transported to a nearby New Jersey hospital. RacingForTheWin.com has heard from sources at East Coast Drag News that Scott Kalitta suffocated and died. Scott Kalitta was 46. The Associated Press has now confirmed this.

Scott Kalitta was born on February 18, 1962 in Snead Island, Florida. He was the son of legendary NHRA crew chief and racer Connie Kalitta and the cousin of teammate Doug Kallita. Scott began his long racing career in the 1980s at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park, and scored his first NHRA win at Houston in the Funny Car class. He then made the move to top fuel, and found success there as well, collecting his first career win there in Topeka in 1993. That career came to an end at the same track it began.

Scott Kalitta was the 1994 and 1995 NHRA Top Fuel dragster champion, and finished 2nd in the 1996 season points. In 1997, he announced his retirement. However, Kalitta would return to racing just two years later, but it would be quickly aborted. Kalitta returned to Top Fuel dragster in 2003, and recorded a top five points finish in 2004. Scott would answer again, the fllowing season, with two victories.

This is sad. I was a fan of his Dad - Connie Kalitta. R.I.P.

Where'd Mikey go???

CIA got Mikey! :jameo: :jameo: :jameo:

I (almost) can't believe you're arguing over something so petty. It's pretty much irrelevant how long the gravel pit is. He may have passed right over a longer pit. Or he may have dug in and stopped just as fast as hitting the wall. Either way, same result. 300 MPH to 0 hurts just as bad whether it's gravel or concrete.

The best track design in the world isn't going to prevent all deaths. He wasn't killed by the track. He was killed because the massive explosion and fire prevented him from slowing the car before it was too late.

IT's the loss of human life in an extremely violent wreck, you insensitive azz. :buttkick:

I'm glad you think the wreck was nothing.

Why don't you go wind up in an accident like that at that speed and let me know the end result, if you survive. :jet:

I stated the runoff was extremely short for drag racing. I stated that I was shocked to see only a 40-foot sand pit and not even a 100 yard stop zone and the only thing there to stop him was a metal fence and a concrete wall.

Mikey said MIR is no safer and he knew this because he lived by there. :bigwhoop:

I showed him that MIR, a track that doesn't run 320+ mph NHRA nitro funny car and nitro top fuel, has a gravel pit over twice as large as Old Bridge Township Raceway Park. The stop zone at MIR is also longer.

Mikey disappeared.

It wouldn't have made much difference, but Old Bridge Township Raceway Park does need to make major improvements to it's track. The track didn't kill him - it contributed.

Pssst. You have to go to your web function on the phone and download them that way. Log in from the phone web site (on you puter) and then go to the pic on your phone. go to "download". It should work that way.
