My Sweetest Boy
my vet also did say not to give the dog real bones and that is what the marrow bone is due to it splintering. She said rawhide is the way to go. Now they make these things called rawhide chips and bruno loves them too. she hates the rawhides with the knots on each end she leaves the knots and eats the middle.

Now I'm confused! To bone or not to bone....that is the question!:cds:

I'll check with my vet tomorrow and get back with her opinion as well.

Marrow bones don't splinter. RAW marrow bones are not bad for dogs. You do have to toss them or freeze them because of the meat/fat on the bone.

Rawhide is not a good choice because some dogs have an issue with the rawhide clogging up their intestines because it is not always easily digested.

They're not supposed to have cooked chicken bones or other cooked "people food" bones because of splintering issues. The marrow bones Catt is talking about getting from Nick's are not cooked, so they won't splinter. Foodlion also carries them, or you can ask your butcher for them. The knuckle bones are made for dogs, and like Catt said, just look for weak spots and then take them away. There are also sterilized bones with no marrow inside, and my dogs love them.

I can't believe your vet would recommend rawhide. I guess they're fine on rare occasions, but they can cause intestinal blockages because they're very hard to digest. Plus many of them have been treated with some nasty chemicals for preserving.

And it's Natural Balance, not New Balance. That's a shoe company. :lmao:
