Good! He even tried telling me that I was lucky he took the job since most companies wouldn't have, given the tree's proximity to the house. Of course, he only said that AFTER he got his money. In the beginning, he said it was a piece of cake.

Whoever you choose, make sure you get every little detail of the job in writing. I made the mistake of trusting his word and didn't think he would back-peddle later on. He was even recommended to me by another county old boy who wouldn't take the job (meaning drop and cut up).

Check into having the Amish do it. I never have, but I bet they do.

I think it was $300 or $350, but he was there for at least half the day. Since they were close to the house, he completely took all the branches off before cutting them. We cut the wood ourselves and burned the branches. Very nice guy.

Is he insured? This one is right up next to the house.

No, that is one of the reasons he is so cheap. He is the most careful guy I have ever seen though. My sis used him and had about 15 trees removed, and my father also who had a couple of real dangerous ones removed. He climbs all the way to the top, and removes each branch one at a time.

I've got to get someone with insurance. This tree is right next to the house, I mean hanging over our porch, but thanks for the input.

The insurance is for them, I think, not your house. If he were to injure himself on your property while working you would be liable if he were not insured. Do you have a million in medical coverage on your homeowners policy?

I think insurance covers the property, or I would assume it does. I'll ask the tree guy when he calls back.

That too, but that's not the main reason that you want them to have it. Your homeowners would cover any damage he did if he wasn't covered. No big deal, but it would also have to pay any medical costs etc. to him, could be a very big deal.

St. Mary's Tree Service will be doing it tomorrow. I'll be running for cover. They've done trees for us before, so I'm banking on having a roof and the neighbors still having their deck tomorrow. We're dropping one of them (3 pronged tree) into their yard. Pictures will be posted.

Yes. He used to have that limo with that on it. He won the lottery at some time. It's St. Mary's Tree Service. They came today, took the trees down, worked their butts off. You can't even tell they've been here. Cleaned everything up real well. He had the neatest stump grinder. He brought it in, then sat in a chair and operated it by remote control. I was going to take pictures today, but didn't. I was totally freaked out about them climbing the trees (no cherry picker involved) and wouldn't even venture near the windows. They did a wonderful job. I got stressed over the entire event. He first quoted me $1850, and I had a quote for $1450, so when he called, I said I had a lower quote and he said he'd to it for $1300. Done deal and he even took out a holly tree I hated. Thumbs up to St. Mary's Tree Service.

Tree removal in 2006-7 - Recommendations

I have used three tree removal companies in St. Mary's County in the past year.

1. St. Mary's Tree Service - rude, unprofessional and, I believe, uninsured
2. Newton's - Good work, nothing fancy.
3. Jeff's Tree Service - The "Surgeon". Jeff's prices are a little higher but his crew surgically removes trees and takes every measure to protect your lawn and surrounding shrubs, trees and structures. I had a 100' Oak removed 20' from my house - great job. My next door neighbor had a similarly sized Oak removed that was sandwiched between our houses (40' between houses) with a good amount of bushes and shrubs surrounding the tree that we didn't want damaged. Once again, super job.

I'm not sure there hasn't been another "Jeff" in the business that was the target of some of the prior posts. But Jeff's Tree Service out of Hollywood, 301-997-0006, is the team to go to if you have a job you want "surgically" completed by professionals.

As a former Ranger for MD. Dept. of Natural Resources, supervising and enforcing the Maryland State Tree Law... I have to jump in.

Legally, anyone can remove a tree without being licensed by Maryland. As you have found out, that frequently means uninsured people - and the insurance is to cover any damage done (by them as they work on the tree/s) to your property. That includes house, landscaping, fencing, etc.

Any other tree work done for hire in Maryland requires the company/owner to be licensed by Maryland DNR. To get this license, they must pass an exam and they must present proof that they have insurance to protect their customers (that's you) against any damage or injury sustained while on your property.

So if you have any other questions, I'm sure the MD. Dept. of Natural Resources website can help.
