Trick or Treating

Why do people take their kids to strangers houses? When I was a kid the houses were to far apart to walk. We got in the car and drove to relatives and friends. We ended up staying 20 minutes at each house because they wanted to take pictures and talk. I had fun. I don't feel that I missed anything because we didn't go to 200 houses.

Like I said I lived in Hollywood. I was related to everyone in Hollywood at the time so everyone's house that I went to I was related. Hence probably why we got drinks and I got cookies. I remember one time I didnt know I was related to the people and the nice old lady invited me and my cousin in and I was thinking this nice old lady just looks nice she wants to kill us. Then my mom walked up and said yes we would love to come in and later told me we were related.

As far as me taking my kids to relatives I dont really no one around here anymore. When my husband and I got married 4 years ago we moved to his hometown in Missouri. We have since moved back and I have nowhere to go to take my kids. That is why I take my kids to strangers houses. Otherwise I would have no where to take them.

When I was a kid, we lived on a farm. We didn't have a neighborhood at all. We lived near a typical rural 'hood with no sidewalks, no lights and houses far apart, and Mom wouldn't take us there. We went to grandma's house in St. Charles. That worked out well for everyone because my aunt was only a few years older than us, and my mom took escort duty for us and her sister.

When we got older, my aunt took escort duty for us. When she was a teenager and too "cool" for trick or treating, she would stand at the head of a court and send us off down the court. One time, my younger brother and I went to this one house, while my aunt chit chated with her friends a block away. This really creepy lady in a witch costume invited us in... hmmmm, violate the cardnial safety rule of ToT-ing or not get any candy.... I was about 9-10 years old and my brother was 4-5...tough one.......we went in. Just barely inside the door....she offered us a choice of homemade cake or wrapped candy. She was really pushing that cake. I was totally freaked out. I knew we shouldn't be in the house. We grabbed the candy and ran.

We told my aunt immediately. She said that the freaky chick was a school teacher. She was testing us. I still think she was a freak.

We started hanging out in our own neighborhood after that. Those St. Charles people were weird....and that was almost 30 years ago.

We discovered that rural houses over-buy candy and wanna get rid of it. We'd get twice as much for half the number of houses.

After we first got married and lived in a townhouse, Halloween was social time for the adults. We all sat on our front stoops and talked. We met some neighbors for the first time doing that. Sometimes we didn't see them for a whole year, but on Halloween, we were old friends. They bused kids into our 'hood there. Lots of houses, little walking. :yay:

OK, so if I sum this up correctly, they do go trick or treating on the 31st but some neighborhoods are better than others for it.

I live up by Greenwell State Park and Sotterly... what are my chances of being hit with trick or treaters?

And that being said, would it just be better for me if I took my son to the Leonardtown trick or treat thing on the 27th and said F it on Halloween? He's 2.

Eff it, he won't know the difference. When my first was 2, we hit 6 houses and we were in the townhouses then... that amounted to 100 feet of walking and he didn't even want to go that far. When number 2 kid was 2, he fell asleep before going ToT-ing and stayed home. Number 3, as I recall, also fell asleep before making it out the door on Halloween.

Hows the Trick or treating in CRE? This is our first year here, and we have a little one. I only worry about the speeding cars, and no sidewalks...

Ok you guys are starting to scare me. :twitch: This is my first Halloween in SOMD. I'm in the Villas at Greenview, a stone's throw from Greenview Knolls Elementary School. How much candy should I get?
Get lots. Any neighborhood where houses are close together are popular because there's less walking, especially townhouse neighborhoods.

Idiots... some mamby pamby HOA-types will occasionally make noise about ToTing on weekends instead of a weeknight or some folks whine about celebrating a so-called pagan holiday on a Sunday... it's all :bs:

Halloween is one of these holidays that where pagans and Christians celebrated something similar and the Christians who were trying to convert the pagans realized the value of incorporating native beliefs in order to win converts, so they rolled it all into one.

The church I go to in Lexington Park is having an actual Halloween Party with the Inflatable Toys, Candy and Games cuz (we aren't worried about calling it Halloween!) we want somewhere safe for the kids to be able to go to where they can just have fun and still get their little teeth rotted out!

I lived in Greenview about a 2 years ago and only had 2 or 3 kids stop by. I bought a lot of candy and was suprised by how few people stoped by.

You could always just set the candy outside and sit inside while the kids trick or treat and then you dont have to see the disappointed faces when you run out.

Good-Luck with that!

I've seen and heard stories from folks that have done that. Only to watch some greedy little heathen with no home training clean-out the majority of the bowl with one fell swoop!

Sorry if I sounded bitter... It's a fine plan for folks that might not be able to get-up and answer the door every couple of minutes. Or those who do not want to be bothered, but still want to offer treats.

Sorry. No I did not take it that way at all. :buddies::love: I always forget to add my smilies to make myself clear. The one downfall of the internet is no one can tell your true feelings unless you add smilies.
