Trimming Dogs Nails

So at first I thought I would be able to handle trimming my chi/jackrussells nails on my own.. How hard could it be?? Well it is hard... he wont sit still I can get like 5 done and then he wont let me touch him cuz he knows I'm going to do it.. lol.

My question is how many people do it on their own and what is the method? How often do you do?
What do you use?
Also, if you take them somewhere wheres the best place and how much is a resonable price to pay?
I'm in the Northern Mechanicsville are so i'd like to find a place close if I decide to take him somewhere.

What?!
I use a dremel tool on my mutts :lmao: They will let me do like 2 paws and then they get a little :jameo: So an hour or so later, I'll go back and finish up

I do take him for walks but usually we just play in the yard.
He is on pancreatic enzymes due to having the lifelong illness epi so it makes his nails grow super fast.

I dremel my dogs nails.... two of mine think its like going to the spa.. TO THE POINT of letting me paint their nails also and falling asleep while its done.
one of the others lets me do his nails but hates his feet touched.. and then my last large dog I do need someone to hold him while I do his!

Is he nasty when you do his nails.. or does he not stay still?

Jumping in .... My boy gives me "the worried eye" like he may snap - that scares me, so I watch his body language and praise him a lot as he hears each clip .... I think the biggest challenge people have is when they clip too short, hurt the critter, then said critter gets a negative feeling about nail clipping.

I used to do 4 guinea pigs a lot, and boy can they wiggle ..... now I only have 1 little piggy to do ..... well plus the dog and the cats .....

I take my Birds to their Vet, and I take my Dog to Rita's Grooming in Prince Frederick. That is probably too far to go for you though.

Do you use the actual Dremel tool or do you use the pedi paws nail trimmer tool? We have the pedi paws and it works but it seems like it takes forever. Im wondering if a dremel is much faster.

I do use a regular dremel... the pedi paws SUCKS BUTT!!!!

you do have to be careful because you can take your own skin off of yourself if your dog pulls back.

and it will heat the dogs nail up fast if you have to dremel alot off.. so I do try to trim off most with trimmers first and then smooth it out with the dremel

I LOVE DOING NAILS.... :yahoo: (as a vet tech also... when I get a chance I will trim all animals nails that come in!!! Owners are thankful for the small things!!)

If anyone need help... I will help out when I can! :howdy: :buddies:

When I put my 130+lb Rottie girl in to be spayed (that was a whopping $400+ bill), I later picked her up to find her nails had all been cut VERY short and cauterized. I guess they did that for her safety since she had so many stitches and her nails were long?

I clip the nails of the cat that likes to climb my leg to get in my lap when I'm sitting in a chair ... ouch, bad kitty .... and also the one that likes to walk across my body when I'm asleep and dig in her nails sometimes .... OUCH bad, bad kitty.

He is very sweet he just moves around too much. He wants to play the entire time I'm doing it.

some dogs quicks will grow just as fast as the nails... and you will not keep them short.. so while she was out they did what we call "quicked" her and then they just used clotting powder to stop them from bleeding or silver nitrate sticks.
quicking a dog should only be done when they are sedated.. if at all! and if you do it .. it should not be often.

Thanks! Maybe I need to send all 3 of them to your house then. Haha!
I hate doing nails cause I'm always afraid I am going to cut too short. Hubby normally does it but he has cut too short in the past and dogs freak out.

You get to have so much fun with your dogs .... I wish I had a female doggie - I doubt my boy would appreciate it if I painted HIS toenails.

I will say doing that makes my job worth it! Makes up for all the sad times... nothing like the little pups taking their first gasps in your hand and hearing them start to make noise! :buddies:
...........those are the good times at the vet!

We do one nail a day in my house. If you do one nail, every day, by the time you get back to the first nail, it can be trimmed again (most of the time), and will help keep them nice and short. I use mainly just a dremel (I use a pedi paw for one of mine that is very sound sensitive. Its not great, but it gets the job done) but if one is particularly long (which I don't like to let them get that way in the first place), then I will cut then grind smooth.

I NEED NAIL HELP !! with my dogs...they are so THICK and LONG... I end up going to stupid petco to get my boy bathed and nails trimmed, because I'm too afraid of hurting him, they grow so fast and are SO long they are tearing up my hardwood floor too !! You said a dremmel, you think that would be best for my large boxer boy? My little girl is so young I will clip hers, they are thin still like puppy nails.
