Trips to Lourdes to cut time spent in purgatory

"Pope Benedict XVI is offering relief from purgatory to Roman Catholics who travel to Lourdes over the next year, the Vatican said yesterday.

Pilgrims to the shrine in south-west France will receive "plenary indulgences" from the Pontiff, which the Church says reduce the time spent being "washed" of sin after death. The indulgences will be available from this weekend until Dec 8, 2008.

The Church teaches that people who do not go directly to heaven must spend time in purgatory, where they can be purified of residual sin."

The same indulgence may be received by going to Our Lady's Church, Medley's Neck and praying for awhile. There are many churches that have been designated as pilgrammage sites for those who, for any reason, can not make it to Lourdes for the 150th anniversary of the apparitions.

There are many other ways to obtain a plenary indulgence often, no travel. Those of us who believe, know what to do.

I'm glad I'm not catholic  You guys have more rules and reg than the Navy.

It's too bad that you think it is a cumbersome "rule" to worship Jesus Christ every Sunday. It's too bad that you think it a burden to follow the teachings of the Lord. No, aps, His yoke is easy and His burden light.

:yahoo: It is far better to have them doing this stuff,

then to be out causing trouble,

or doing some thing that actually matters.

Go Catholics, rock and roll. :larry:

god will only partially absolve you of some of your sins if you buy a plane ticket!

although, he is everywhere .... he is mostly here.

Buy an extra souviner and get 25% off (your stay in purgatory)!

You do not have to spend money to gain an indulgence! As I said, you can gain your indulgence by going to Our Lady's Church, Medley's Neck.

When one dies, few are perfect. That means that instead of going straight to Heaven, many spend time in Purgatory, many until the end of time. That is why we pray for the dead, that their time in Purgatory may be shortened.

Lighten up. Nobody mentioned disliking Christianity. Just think that catholics seem to have a lot more rules than the other forms of worship.
You going to start car bombing the Lutherns or Baptists?

I was mostly just saying that if god is everywhere then what does it matter where you pray.

As I said, we who beleive know that prayers in front of the Blessed Sacrament, the physical Body of Christ under the appearance of bread, mean more. Prayers for the dead, said in a cemetary, have more weight.

By making a pilgrimage to a Holy Site, one invests time and talent to make a conscious effort to 1) get to the holy site. and 2) pray and fulfil the other spiritual requirement, often this means going to Confession, assisting at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, and receiving Holy Communion. Plus whatever prayers are requested. One also needs to pray for the intentions of the Holy Father. No money involved.

I never said you disliked Christianity, but the implication that these "rules" are something to lament and/or avoid is in error. It is by God's design that we were made for Him, and our hearts will be at rest, peace and joy in Him. (thanks, St. Augustine!)
Nothing in the OP or my post has anything to do with Lutherans or Baptists, so that last snippets is a bit of a stretch, don't you think??

:banghead: I say now that what I posted was not very nice or true.

The Catholic Church does many things that I greatly admire and I regret giving any disrespect because the Church does not deserve it.

I grew up Catholic only to fall away as an adult, and I find that many Protestants do not understand that the rituals and traditions in Catholicism are a big part of what makes that Church strong and long lasting.

Therefore I apologize for posting inapropriately. :hot:

You have friends and do you talk to them? Or do you just say, "they exist" so why talk to them? Do you ask friends questions (you certainly ask a lot of religious questions here for a person to not believe in God) - or do you rather say, oh I know their out there so I'll be silent?

People who identify with God understand the need... people without God will never understand the answer to your question. Prayer is useless to those who do not know God exists.

By the way, what do non-religious people do in a time of need?

sorry, didn't have my glasses on!!!! you said "where you pray." I read "why" incorrectly... old age I guess.

Disregard or if you entertain the question anyway I would like to know.

What are you kidding me?

Of course I have friends .... I guess if they were omnipotent I could talk to them wherever ....

You don't know god exists .... you have faith he does. That's kind of the point.

We rely on ourselves .... or help ourselves if you will.
