TSA Will Permit Knives, Golf Clubs on U.S. Planes - Bloomberg

The U.S. Transportation Security Administration will let people carry small pocketknives onto passenger planes for the first time since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, along with golf clubs, hockey sticks and plastic Wiffle Ball-style bats.

The agency will permit knives with retractable blades shorter than 6 centimeters (2.4 inches) and narrower than 1/2 inch at the widest point, TSA Administrator John Pistole said today at an aviation security conference in Brooklyn. The change, to conform with international rules, will take effect April 25.

Welcome news, especially for my daughter who I have taught since the 1st grade that the 2nd thing you put in your pocket every morning after your Chapstick is your pocketknife. Now if only the schools will relax the pocketknife rule, we will all be happier.

:yahoo: the weapons the 9/11 hijackers used are now legal to carry on a plane.

Why do we need the TSA?

In the article I read, it said that boxcutters and razor blades would still be prohibited. Also the pocketknives blades couldn't lock into place.

Time to dig into the tackle box and find my old case trapper knife.

In what universe does a free people face a threat of men armed with box cutters intent on taking over airliners and the response is to disarm...we, the people???? No sewing needles, no pocket knives, nothing. I can't remember how many pen knives I've lost in the last decade because I ALWAYS have one on me, ALWAYS one in my shaving kit and ALWAYS forget and the TSA gets them.

This is us; we celebrate the folks on flight 93 who fought back...and make it harder to do so.

I suppose this is a step in the right direction but, that's like falling off a ladder and just now, over a decade later, we're putting a foot on the first rung.

We are not free and we are, for damn sure, not brave.

Don't people normally check their golf clubs and large items like that?

2 hockey sticks or golf clubs count as 1 piece of checked luggage, which costs $25 or more to check. Why check it if you can carry it on for free AND have something for self defense?

My understanding is that carry-on items must be under a certain size. Help me here?

I've got one of the last Old Timer Uncle Henry knives made in the USA, and so far I have remembered to throw it in the glove box of the truck before going into the airport. I think I would risk missing my flight before giving my Uncle Henry to TSA.

But yeah, I whole heartedly agree with you on this. I have said many times that I am surprised no one has used their belt to choke a few passengers while threatening to hijack a plane. God help us if this ever happens - can't imagine getting on a plane with some people who don't have a belt.

If it is typical 'luggage', yes, but exceptions always apply - car seats, crutches, pet carriers, guitars, etc. Remember this -

The way checked luggage is handled, I guess you don't want to risk getting your golf clubs bent or hockey sticks broken.

I'm not saying it made sense. I was replying to a comment that the very items that were used to take over a plane would now be allowed. According to the article that I read on CNN, I was disputing that comment.

You are right, it's a step in the right direction and should have been taken years ago.

Didn't mean to imply you were saying it makes sense. Very often, I'll use and quote a post as a baseline for a rant. Your post was simply the catalyst for me to comment about something that has bugged me for over a decade;

WHY in the hell would a GOP potus, the party of personal responsibility, gun rights, less gummint, EVER think the TSA is a good idea let alone that absolutely astonishing concept of DISARMING a people under attack??????

"There might be bad guys on your plane. Please surrender your weapons...and mouth wash...and water bottles...and assume we assume your guilt..."

I mean, among other things, it so flies in the face of ANY concept of a free people and yet, we bleat, get in line and do as we are told because...it makes us 'safer'??? To be defenseless???

It's like those two fruit pies, McCain and Graham, over Paul. He's the kook???? He's arguing that the President of the United States of America has NO business playing judge, jury and executioner, that DRONES, flying over the US, armed and with the ability and PURPOSE to KILL, ANY OF US, at the swipe of the Presidents pen, OUR SERVANT??

TSA's gonna be more lenient with those because they were such a threat after 9/11? At most, they sting like an open-handed slap.
