TV subtitles

I keep subtitles on because a lot of times the dialog is garbled, too low, or otherwise not understandable.

That's the reason. Sometime 10 or 20 years ago TV shows started mixing audio the same way movies do. Sounds great if you have a surround sound system with a dedicated front speaker (5.1 or 7.2 or whatever). Sounds "okay" if you have a sound bar that typically has 3-5 speakers with aurial delay algorithms to simulate surround. Sounds garbled and horrible with everything down mixed to two TV speakers.

Too distracted to actually listen? You can see a whole line of dialog in a flash and go back to texting and not miss anything.

I only turn them on in the winter when the pellet stove is running. Kind of loud, so I use captions instead of jacking the volume way up.

I like closed caption because I feel like I miss a lot if I cannot understand the person speaking. I probably have some hearing loss as well.
My husband doesn't like it and he wins. since he usually controls the TV buttons :lmao:

Subtitles make comprehension much easier. Like with this music video.

Subtitles is also a good way to hone your foreign language skills.

I'm the same way, I cant hear a damn thing they're saying so I always use the sub-titles, hubby's hearing isnt any better than mine so he doesnt mind them.

I've noticed they don't work very well on music performances. Especially for classic rock songs I grew up on.

They get all the lyrics wrong.

Subtitles are always on for me. I realized I don't pay attention enough when watching without, but also sometimes I really can't hear! If I read and see at the same time, I am less likely to wind up doom-scrolling on my phone and missing most of the show.
