U.N. official slams U.S. as 'stingy' over aid

I was just reading this and getting ready to post it....:burning:

Offers of aid have poured in from around the world in the past two days, with the European Union's executive arm releasing $4 million in emergency aid and pledging an additional $27 million. Canada and several European nations — including Spain, Germany, Ireland and Belgium — each pledged about $1 million yesterday.

Secretary of State Colin L. Powell hinted that the $15 million U.S. offer was only the first installment of a larger aid package to those countries devastated by 30-foot waves triggered by a massive underwater earthquake.

Dear UN

Please use the Iraqi "oil for food" kickbacks that you've been getting over the last 12+ years to aid the victims.

Much love,

US

We are really being lectured on taxes. They are doing their anti-Bush, lower tax bit. You have to realize, this wonderful bloke comes from a country with a VAT that ranges from 12-24% by the time you have a completed product (VAT does not=sales tax ... it is a bit different the way it works) and, if you havent registered for your appropriate tax rate, your wages will be withheld at 50% (which I believe is the maximum income tax rate or a few steps off it at the minimum). He has obviously decided that we should curb our productive economy, tax everyone like them, and give it all away to everyone else. What a brilliant idea! Don't you think?

This part really pissed me off...
U.N. Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Jan Egeland suggested that the United States and other Western nations were being "stingy" with relief funds, saying there would be more available if taxes were raised. (emphasis added)
Now some UN weenie wants to lecture us on taxes? I might listen if it came from an economist instead of a humanitarian.

I'd also like to know how much Norway is donating...

To be fair, on per capita donations to international humanitarian needs, Denmark is first, Norway is second, Switzerland is fourth, and one of those similar regioned/scandanvian type countries is third. I can't remember which one right now. That was a ranking in like 2000 or 2001. I would have to go find the statistics again. The U.S. is like 18th, but we are number one in per capita to those on the list with military spending. Our military is used more than anyone elses for U.N missions. Therefore, is it apples to oranges? Do they need our military just as much as they need humanitarian? Its subjective.

It still doesn't give him room to lecture us on taxes or a donation that (despite our population and productivity to do more) is still significant and will surely be an initial allocation, as most of our humanitarian assistance. Without per capita, we still by far dominate international humanitarian assistance in pure dollars.

Also, those countries who can't give so much, other than using the U.N. angle for our military missions, also do not have to pump money into military and economic relief for their own countries because many depend on our economy and the fact they don't need to protect themselves so much since the U.S. is there and nobody is going to hound one of our allies with the big stick sitting at the end of the block.

If they didn't have that to depend on, they would have to spend much more in economic growth initiatives and military in their own countries. We do what they don't have to, because of who we are.

Good point. I've always said that I would love to be ruler of some small country. Just be good friends with the US and you never have to worry about a military.

I saw this early this morning too, first thought, nothing like bitting that hand that feeds you. :ohwell:

:burning: Okay...THIS burns me even more than the U.N. comment...:tantrum

In an interview on NBC's Today show Tuesday, Powell said that "clearly, the United States will be a major contributor to this international effort. And, yes, it will run into the billions of dollars."

Let the backpedalling begin!
Egeland told reporters on Tuesday: "I've been misinterpreted when I yesterday said that I believed that rich countries in general can be more generous."

"It has nothing to do with any particular country or the response to this emergency. We are in early days and the response has so far been overwhelmingly positive," he said.

"The international assistance that has come and been pledged from the United States, from Europe and from countries in the region has also been very generous," Egeland added.

I don't know who I'm madder at... this Egeland moron for saying this mush or the Bush administration for reacting to it. Bush is once again allowing himself to get let by the nose by liberals who will complaign about everything he does for the next four years. You would think that he would have realized by now that he doesn't have to care what the media says or reports about him... just do the right thing and America will support him.

Personally, I do not like the idea of sending even $1 to Indonesia, or any other of those predominantly Muslim countries that got hit. Al Queda's biggest presence outside of the Middle East is there, and the governments there have been supporting them. I would help out Thailand, India, and Sri Lanka, and tell the rest to get their aod from Osama and his boys.

Actually, I wouldn't send anything to Sri Lanka. They rejected aid from Israel. Any country that would reject aid from any other country at a time like this isn't deserving of aid (IMO).

I heard that last night on the news. If I were Bush, I'd pull US money and tell them to go to hell.

The UN as a body acts like a spoiled child - "is that ALL???" Kofi Annan was on TV last night with some interview talking about this tsunami business. I, personally, think he doesn't have the moral authority to be talking about ANYTHING and should actually be sitting in a jail cell somewhere.

Apparently it had something to do with the fact that Israel was planning to send a small contingent of military, along with their aid. It was the military part that had them upset.

Vrai, I think you and maybe some others on here are old enough to remember the 60's counter-counter-culture statement of "Need help... call a Hippie!" in response to attacks on police departments. I think the same thing should apply to most of these countries who have spent the last two years or more denouncing the United States, protesting global commerce, protesting capitalism, etc. Now that they need help, guess who's expected tp pick up the check? I think we should send them a letter saying "Need Help... Call a Terrorist."

I was born in November of '63 - I only "remember" that stuff from historical accounts. But I see your point and couldn't agree more. That's what pisses me off about the whole BS these nuts spew. They hate us and everything about us, but by God they sure love our money.

Be brave, UN! Stand by your principles and refuse the help of the Great Satan! Tell us to go to hell and that you don't need our stinking money - that you can do everything without us. Kick us out of the UN! :yay:
