U.S. troops stranded in Mideast...................

I'm...

It makes you angry, but you deal with it. How many times were you extended on a det or deployment after you were all set to go home? That happened to us all the time, but hey... that's the military. You want stability, go sell hardware at Sears.

...reacting to the contractor 'who knew?' part of this. This administration has outsourced far too much of the one branch of government that should not be outsourced.

I wa spretty lucky, most of the time we were relieved on schedule. Where I was the squadron relieving us brought their own transportation. I rarely took the airlift.

I was slated to ride a C-130 from Brunswick to Panama :dead: Luckily the plane broke so we caught a ride on a G5. I was in Panama, unpacked, got the "Be safe" brief and was finishing the turn over before our original C-130 landed. The Lt on that plane was not happy

Airlift has been outsourced for at least 30 years. This is nothing new. Before ATA it was Richy Rich airlines

I don't see how outsourcing of personnel transport is a bad thing. The military should stick to military missions like moving troops to and from combat areas until they are secure.

Like Pete said, outsourcing has been going on for decades. Flying Tiger got most of our troops to and from Vietnam.

...is that if the job requires a weapon it should be, it MUST be a US government employee.

:yay: Very true.

Waiting a few extra days to fly home sure beats getting stuck on a boat for the slow cruise home.

We could mobilize a lot of airlift capability and move those troops, but this is not an emergency situation that would justify that. The troops are housed and fed. We aren't talking about getting thousands of troops into battle.

The Sgt. who had his mommy call the congressman should be ashamed. If she did it on her own, she needs a good :buttkick:

He's a grown man. This is not a case of a kindergarten kid not having a ride home.

I remember going home for Christmas leave one year, and my squadron did "sleigh ride" flights where our planes would fly around to different areas of the country dropping people off so they wouldn't have to pay for a commercial flight. My sleigh ride flew from Jacksonville to Glenview, IL, to Brunswick, ME, to McGuire AFB in NJ, then to Pittsburgh, PA and then back to Jax. The crew preflighted on time, but had a problem with the nose gear and were five hours late getting out of Jax because... there were no other planes available. Then they lost a prop synchophaser in Brunswick and that set them back another three hours. They were supposed to get into Pittsburgh at 1:00PM, and didn't make it in to the 911TH TAC at Pittsburgh until almost midnight. I'm sure you read all about this in the news... oh yeah... Bush wasn't president then so nobody in the media gave a sh*t.

My parents ended up waiting at the 911TAC ops building all day and night with me, and when they found out that the crew and passengers had been hard at it since 0500, and probably hadn't got a chance to eat, my Mom and Dad went out and found a late-night diner and ordered 23 meals to go. When my plane did show up, everybody piled off to use the bathroom as they just did a stop&go in NJ, and as they came in we had dinner waiting for them. The crew was starved and really appreciated it, as did the passengers. Then my Dad, who was a chief switchman for the Bell System at the time, hotwired the payphone at the operations building so everyone could call home to let their folks know when they would be back. Then we got back on the plane and headed back to Jax.

Maybe my parents should have called our congressman and complained instead.

How many times have you heard about thousands of passengers showing up at airports only to find out the airline they have tickets on just went belly up? That's standard procedure for these companies as if you go public and say "Hi employees... look, we're out of cash in two weeks, and you will all be out of work the friday after next. But we still expect all of you to stick around and show up for work everyday" you're going to lose a ton or revenue that you're probably going to need.

ATA didn't say a damn thing for the same reason.

...I was just bytching. I am, though, insistent that anyone with a weapon should be GI.

It sucks that they have to wait, but stuff like this comes with being in the military sometimes.

What really needs to be asked here is "WHY" the airline went bankrupt. I'll bet a flat of Larry's daisies that high fuel costs are a big part of the company's demise. Why high fuel costs? Because DEMS and their bark humping minions don't want us to drill on the US or build new refineries in the US.

So there you go, it's all Al Gore and his junk science mumbo-jumbo that's to blame.:lmao:

Whats wrong with c-141's, c-5's, or c-17's? Doesn't the Air Force still have MAC or AMC or whatever it's called? Back in the 80's I flew alot on c-141's and c-5's going overseas. I even deployed to Saudia Arabia on a c-141 and Bosnia on a c-130 in the mid 90's.

Same here ...........
