This is going to go one of two ways:
1. People move to an app like Rednote/Xiaohongshu, an app directly controlled by the CCP. At least with TikTok, the company had CCP influences. Rednote/Xiaohongshu, is completely controlled by the CCP.
2. The ban gets reversed last-second and this becomes a massive nothing-burger, sort of like how the debt limit pops up every year until the last second where they conveniently pass a new debt ceiling.

China considers selling TikTok U.S. operations to Musk, Bloomberg reports

The Chinese government is considering a plan that would have Elon Musk acquire TikTok’s U.S. operations to keep the app from being effectively banned, Bloomberg News reported on Monday.

The contingency plan is one of several options China is exploring as the U.S. Supreme Court determines whether to uphold a law that calls for China-based ByteDance to divest TikTok’s U.S. business by Jan. 19, the report said, citing anonymous sources.

After that deadline, third-party Internet service providers would be penalized for supporting TikTok’s operations in the country.

Under the plan, Musk would oversee both X, which he currently owns, and TikTok’s U.S. business, Bloomberg said. However, Chinese government officials haven’t yet decided on whether it would proceed, the report said, noting that the plan is still preliminary.

It’s unclear whether ByteDance knows about the Chinese government’s plans and TikTok and Musk’s involvement in the discussions, the report said. Senior Chinese officials are debating contingency plans involving TikTok’s future in the U.S. as part of larger discussions about working with President-elect Donald Trump, the report added.

I have never used Tik Tok one single time. As far as I can tell it's all weirdos acting out their mental illness and I have no interest in that.
Same. A friend of mine did show me one of my daughter taken from her security camera. She was at her grill and the gas built up and it poofed on her. 😂😂😂

No injuries incurred. 😁

While I have never signed up for TikTok account there are posters here on SOMD that include TikTok videos in their postings and even some that auto-run. As I understand it simply viewing those allows for the collection of data. I don't know if it is true or not, but I have read that some data is being collected from non-user viewers.

What data would they collect by someone watching a video embedded in a post? It can't be anything of value. Even if, say, someone's watching on their phone, which has their bank info etc, and the video embed could somehow access that information, in that case you might as well shut down the whole internet because that's a hell of a virus. Now if they go to the TT app to watch, that's on them.

If you don't know what data is being collected how can you say it isn't "anything of value"?

Besides, my initial reply was directed at your statement "I have never used Tik Tok one single time." Viewing is using, right?
