Update on Maryland Helmet Modification Bill

Not sure what side of the fence everyone comes down on when it comes to this subject, but following is a notice I received today from ABATE of Maryland and thought I would share it for those that are interested:

ABATE of Md. would like to thank everyone who took the time to show their support for our freedom of choice last night at the Freedom Rally at the State House in Annapolis. The turnout was very good, even though Ma Nature threatened to pee on our parade...but the old lady held off!

Our Helmet Modification bill is waiting in the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee for a vote. NOW IS THE TIME TO HELP! We need everyone to contact the committee chairman and POLITELY request that he allow this bill to be voted on! All it takes is a few minutes out of your day to make the call, you will not speak to the senator, but to an aide. Politely request that Senator Frosh allow Senate Bill 766 to be voted on in his committee soon.

That is all that is needed.....but do two more things, please.....tell all your riding friends to do the same, then you pick up the phone the next day and do it again! Phone calls are tallied and are very effective. Contact information is below.

THIS NEEDS TO BE DONE ASAP...this week!
This is the best chance Maryland riders have had in many years to modify the helmet law to allow freedom of choice.
Please give a damn, make the call!
But be POLITE.

Office of Senator Frosh
Chairman, Senate Judicial Proceedings Comittee

Thank you for your help

What is in this bill that your are asking us to support? Unlike our politicians in Washington I would like to read a bill before forming an opinion!

It was hard to find, but after a couple of links I think it's a temporary repeal of the helmet law. No skid lid requirement for a couple years and then an evaluation of the statistics to see if there was a major increase of dead and/or vegatative motorcyclists.

Why would anyone WANT to get rid of the helmut law? Who wouldn't want their head protected?

Makes no sense to me........

Some folks believe it should be their choice instead of leaving the decesion to people that think it's a good idea to give your tax dollars to Casa de Maryland.

Nobody is suggesting you can't wear a helmet.

I have always worn mine; even back when we didn't have to. I always will wear it but don't think there should be a law making me wear it. Just like I don't think there should be a law saying wear your seatbelt.

Because it is more Nanny Statism! I always wear a helmet also, and a seatbelt in a car, but I don't think it is the business of the government to be making us do what is or isn't best for us. Let us know the risks and let us make our own decisions!

Are you going to say the same thing when they start dictating to you what type of foods you can eat because of your BMI, and if you deviate you are subject to penalty of the law? That is one of those slippery slope arguments!

Remember the saying; when they came for the gypsies, I was silent, for I wasn't a gypsy, when they came for the jews, I was silent, because I wasn't a jew, when they finally came for me, there was no one left to speak up for me.

We need to stop this nanny statism now, before there are no recourses left to us.

Concur. I'm another who always wears a helmet, and always wears a belt, and I think laws requiring these things are not needed. Children under the age of majority, sure, since evidently there's lots of stupid parents out there, but once you are of age to make that choice, let people make it.

I agree, but I would also support insurance clauses that say that you're on your own if you're not wearing a helmet/wearing a seatbelt/etc.

Then I guess you should be on your own if your eating habits are not government approved, or you like to scuba dive, snow ski or mountain climb? Where does it stop?

Again that pesky slippery slope argument! :boxing:

Actually, I am fine if my insurance says that I'm on my own if I do X. I will either not do X or get different insurance that allows me to do X.

I'd love to see an insurance plan that says, we give you these low rates, but to qualify for these low rates, you have to do XYZ, where XYZ could be get yearly checkups, don't smoke/stop smoking, get down to X% body fat within X amount of time, etc. Oh, and they pay for what is necessary to help achieve those goals (i.e. stop smoking aids, gym membership, yearly checkups). It's a win/win...you get healthier and they lower their risk that you'll need something expensive.

And all this has absolutely nothing to do with government anything. I do not approve of the nanny state.

I agree, but I would also support insurance clauses that say that you're on your own if you're not wearing a helmet/wearing a seatbelt/etc.

Ans a clause that says you can't sue anyone if you're not wearing it because someone would try to sue the State for not forcing thier loved one to wear a helmet.
