When the 1,000th American died in September 2004, the insurgency was just gaining steam. The 2,000th death came as Iraq held its first elections in decades, in October 2005. The U.S. announced its 3,000th loss on the last day of 2006, at the end of a year rocked by sectarian violence.

The 4,000th death will come with the war further out of the public eye, and replaced by other topics on the front burner of the U.S. presidential campaigns.

Things are going so well in Iraq The Huffington Post has to find a blogger willing to predict something that hasn't happened yet. So desparate to create bad news for lack of any REAL news.

Albeit in such starkly smaller numbers than any war in the past, folks like you and Fauxrest can't see past your politics to realize this is a success story in our abilites to fight wars. I pain at just one American death, but I am also able to see how our ability to reduce death as a mark of military success. It's a stinking shame all you can see is "news" like this to further your political agenda.

- US Civil War lasted 4 years - US deaths over 618,000 - Average 154,500 per year

- WWI lasted 1 year 7 months – US deaths 53,500 – Average 37,700 per yeaar

- WWII lasted 4 years - US deaths over 290,000 - Average 72,500 per year

- Korean War lasted 3 years - US deaths over 54,000 - Average 18,000 per year

- Vietnam War lasted 8 years - US deaths over 58,000 - Average 7,250 per year

- Desert Storm lasted not ever 2 months - US deaths 407 – Projected average 2442 per year (if the war had gone on for more than a year)

- Iraq War so far lasts 5 years - US deaths 3990 - Average 798 per year​

...McCain walking around Iraq yesterday and talking to folks, while wearing his flack jacket. The thought occured to me, what if a sniper got him and what would his thoughts be?

"I'm glad to be here dying for my country"?

How about "My life is gonna end in this #### hole???"

The Civil war was a battle for the soul of our nation.

WWI was a huge mistake for us to be involved in. What did we gain as a nation for the price we paid?

WWII became the war against fascism and Imperialism and there were clear good guys and bad guys even though one bad guy, communism, won as much as we did. The US truly flourished and prospered after that war.

Korea? What did we get out of that?

Vietnam? Bitter, bitter lesson we've already forgot.

Iraq? What are we buying with our blood and treasure?

This thread is about the numbers (actually numbers that haven't even happened yet). I have provided facts on the numbers. All you can reply with is cheap rhetoric.

People die every day. Soldiers die in training. They drop dead of heart attack. When a President sends people into harms way, he has an obligation for it to be worth the price and an obligation to use those troops in America's national interest, not anyone else's.

WWI our ships were being blown out of the water by German uboats. Acts of War. Germany was leading an assault on a continent. We were key in stopping that from happening.

WWII was clearly a moral war for us to engage in. And communism won for a time. They eventually lost.

Korea, we prevented an entire peninsula from being occupied by yet another sect of communism. This country is key to controlling what gets shipped in and out of that region.

Vietnam was a waste. We could have prevented another country from succumbing to communism if we had kept the media out of it and fought this war like we fought WWII. Now the Vietnamese live as prisoners in their own country.

Iraq, we rid this world of a threatening dictator. Perhaps this could be a blooming of democracy in a region that has never seen it. But, God forbid we inflict such an evil thing as freedom on those poor oppressed people. Oh wait... nevermind... it's about oil. Okay, we preserved the oil in this region from falling into the wrong hands.

We can sit around and dredge up all sorts of reasons for not going to war; especially after the fact. Ron Paul believed Lincoln should have never gotten us into the Civil War. All sorts of anti-war angles going on.

If we had found WMD (the smoking gun) in Iraq everyone would be saying it was worth it. So we are left with: we toppled a brutal dictator that used WMD and constantly threatened the region for control of the regions oil. We did what we did for what this president believed (as approved by our Congress) was for moral reasons and because of our increasing technical abilities to fight wars (getting back to the subject) we have been (with every war) able to substantially reduce loses.
