The elaborate ceremony -- in which one U.S. officer kissed a new copy of Islam's holy book before giving it to the tribal leaders -- reflected the military's eagerness to stave off anger among Sunni Arabs it has been cultivating as allies."

Yeah but they don't think the way we do nor do they have the same freedom of expression. You're taught in the military to honor the customs of the country you are in and considering this whole Iraq thing is no longer about taking out Sadam or finding weapons of mass destruction but about establishing democracy which I would assume also means being diplomatic - shredding, shooting, spitting on their religious texts in a country that has pretty much NEVER had freedom is a pretty stupid thing to do.

The last thing we need to do is have a conversation about who is more or less pregnant in the Balkans. Those people, all of them, have been a good bit less civil than they may otherwise have been to one another. For centuries.

Balderdash my ass Larry - in the military you ARE taught to respect the customs of whatever particular foreign country you are in. In my office, the female civilians that go to meet with the Saudis are required to cover their hair, everyone who conducts business with foreign countries are taught what they can say, what they can't, what's considered rude etc.

So what actual purpose did it serve to shoot the Quran?
