WTH? Did anybody else see this yesterday? I can't remember where I saw this though; might've been on the evening news. Hence the absence of a link.

Yep, training flights but not demonstrations. They need to maintain proficiency and readiness. USAF Thunderbirds to resume limited training flights | U.S.A.F. Thunderbirds

Ok. Makes sense. They are fighter pilots, same as the Navy Blue Angels, and need to remain proficient in their skills. That includes basic formation flying, which is 80% of their shows.

Also, every one of those nicely painted fighter jets they fly can be converted, in about 24 hours, into the machines of air superiority and death they were intended for.

Freedom does have a price. I'm all for it.

The Air Force has always seemed to be better funded than the other branches.
When teaching a multi-branch motorcycle class I point out where to find the head to the Navy and Marine personnel, the latrine for the Army folks and where the rest lounge is for the Air Force.

I know they get much nicer training bikes than the Navy

Ask members of each branch what "secure a building" means.

The Marine will tell you that they will use a frontal assault laying down superior suppressive fire, storm and take over the building killing all they encounter. The Soldier will tell you that they will surround the building, establish interlocking fire zones, kill any that try to escape and hold until relieved or further ordered. The Sailor will tell you that they will ensure all doors and windows are locked and all lights and unnecessary electrical equipment is turned off. The Airmen will tell you that they will establish a five-year lease contract with an option to buy the building.

A marine in a foxhole half full with rainwater, dead bodies around, bombs exploding and bullets flying past his head: "This place sucks".

Army soldier enduring pretty much the same thing, but farther back with more cover and protection, looks at the Marines: "I bet that place sucks worse than this".

Navy sailors onboard ship (me) doing close in battery support for the Marines and army: "I bet that place really sucks".

Air Force guy checks into his brand new BEQ, has his own bathroom and flat screen TV, realizes his new room only has basic cable and no internet, calls home: "This place sucks big time and is the pits - call my Congressman."

The only problem with that last scenario si that Air Farce pilots wouldn't be caught in a BEQ or any base housing - they would stay off base in a luxury hotel. (Check with Marine and Navy pilots who flew in teh Balkans).

Well, I did state "BEQ" for enlisted guys, but I can agree with the rest of your story.:buddies:

The air farce only has to keep planes flying, CNO has to pay for things the float and things that fly. Keeping ships at sea is costly
If CNO had his way, there wouldn't be an RDT&E budget, he'ld be refueling his carrriers and putting ships back to sea.

Does the Navy still have more aircraft than the AF? And does the Army still have more boats than the Navy? Used to be that ironic way in the past.

And to think usually all four service recruiting offices are right next door to each other. Guess the intelligence test begins at 'Which door shall I enter?'

It is a good thing we are all on the same side, I think.
