USB ports aren't working...

I'm running windows 10 on an HP laptop and none of my USB ports work. They didn't work before I updated from windows 8.1 and I was hoping that upgrading to windows 10 would solve the problem. Here is what I've tried so far.

I've gone in to device manager and selected each USB port and all say "device is working properly"
I've tried updating the drivers but it says I'm running the most up to date drivers.
I have also disabled each port then re-enabled them.
I've even uninstalled the USB ports and re-installed all of them

I'm at a loss.

Any help anyone can provide would be welcome and appreciated.

Wow all these computer wizards here and no one has any ideas for me? My laptop is relatively new still so maybe I should try and return it?

I am no expert but I would say it is a hardware issue and not a software issue. Take it back and buy a Macbook

:yeahthat: If it was broke before and it is still broke after upgrading the OS, my bet is that it has always been broke.

Confirmed, not an expert.

The GF's desktop windows machine went boom. I bought her a new Windows machine, took it back after I used my Mac to google "lagging keyboard" and "slow mouse" and attempted the 6,872 possible remedies. I relented to her pleas not to spend too much and got her a windows laptop and spent hours on my MacBook googleing "wont connect to the internet" and "running slow". It magically connected 3 days later for no apparent reason and it still slow as hell to the point it is infuriating but hey I saved $500

Pete, I was just giving you a hard time. I purchased Macs for my mother and grandmother precisely because I didn't want to perform tech support over the phone from 2000 miles away every weekend.

But for myself, I always prefer a windows/Linux box.

Doesn't Microsoft still have USBView as a utility for troubleshooting?

Best thing I ever did was buy my parents iPads. I used to be anti Apple cult but got assimilated because it does just work all the time.

I won't be buying a MAC. Copy no fix for my USB issue and I agree that it's most likely a hardware issue. It did work when my computer was new

If it worked when the computer was new, and you happen to have a recovery disc for your original OS, you could at least rule out a bad driver issue.

This is a step I would like to note that is not required on a Mac

Have you tried a different USB cable? They can, and do, fail.

Yes, multiple USB devices have been tried, all with different cables. I'm going to see if I can send it in for a warranty repair, or maybe I'll give geek squad a call.

Not sure I agree. If you are trying to isolate the cause of a fault in any system (computer, toaster, car), returning to a known good configuration is one of the first troubleshooting steps you should take.

He mentioned that the USB ports worked when he purchased the computer, so if there is a way to return the computer to the exact same configuration as existed at that time, it would be the best way to determine if the issue is related to a configuration change or is due to faulty hardware.
