It's certainly nothing new. I worked at a slaughter house...very common.
I'm curious how one is supposed to move a downed cow, if not with a fork lift.
The down cattle shouldn't even go to slaughter. I don't necessarily have a problem with downed cattle on the farm being lifted with machinery...it's the way it has to be done. But downed cattle should not be sent to slaughter.
Good beef plants don't use old worn out dairy cattle.
So, what are we supposed to do with them?
That's because dairy farmers use and abuse the cows until they are so drained they can barely move. Once they are worthless to them, they ship them off to one of these cheapo meat packing companies that our schools and fast food restaurants buy from because they are so cheap.
That's not exactly true. Although, dairy cattle don't have the best life possible. Most retired dairy cows are only ~6 yrs old when sent to slaughter. Cows can live to be easily 3 times that. It's hard on a cow to be constantly pregnant and milking (10 mos. out of the year). Most retired dairy cows should easily be able to walk onto a livestock trailer. If they're that badly off when they're "retired," then the farm did something wrong.
