Use or Sell-By Dates

This is probably a dumb question. Before I use to read whether the date on a product was a "sell by" or a "use by" date. Now all there appears to be is a date listed. Am I to assume its the "use" by date to be safe? Generally I'd give it 3-5 days after a "Sell By" Date. Product is lunchmeat. It smells perfectly fine. Date listed is 1/26/12. Would y'all eat this?

I'm paranoid. I would eat it but only after I browned it in a skillet (like making a turkey melt)

Between this thread and the only other one I started on botchulism signs/canning, I'm starting to think people will not want to partake in any dinner parties or cookouts at my house.

Thanks! I ate almost half and was feeling paranoid... does this taste funny? Is it my mayonnaise taste? Is this the smoked flavor? Is this smoked at all? Is it me? Is this what bad meat tastes like? I definately could not enjoy it. I threw it out and opted for some left over potato salad from a turkey shoot last weekend.

Thanks!!

I give lunch meat about two weeks, I make sure it stays sealed up tight. That did not work so well with the molded bagels I found this morning that was sitting on top of the fridge for about a month.

I'm a freak about expiration dates and throw anything that hits it away, whether it's been opened or not. My mother, on the other hand, will eat things that expired a year before, and she's not dead yet.

So....

after your post about yogurt, I did some research. I determined that it is probably safe to eat after the expiration date. I had some yogurt in the fridge that was a few days past the expiration date. I opened it, took one bite, and the tought of eating it made me nauseous, so i threw it away and spit the bite I had in my mouth in the sink.
