Used BMW Bikes

I been thinking of getting a older BMW 2002 -2005 1150RTs I have seen a few of them here in SOMD. I really like the look of that bike the riding position and all body work its a beautiful bike to see riding and standing still.
I have not driven a bike in 25 years now I am getting that bug again I guess it that over 50 thing. I want something confortable to ride around , back and forth to work. I have had couple bikes in the past Honda , Yamaha and one Harley .

So any comments on the BMWSs good prices , maintance ? any Issues I need to be aware of that would cost me , good stuff bad stuff about the bikes.

AND here I am!!

IF you can swing the price difference go with the 2004.. First year with dual spark and totally rid the bike of it's surging problem (real or perceived).

1150 motor is a ROCK.. as is the transmission. EASY bike to work on if you like to do your own maintenance and it's a great two up bike that you can still take out and drag a knee if you want.

2005 was the first model year for the R1200RT.. Doesn't sound like a big deal 1150 - 1200, but two different bikes for sure.

1150 has linked ABS, and how it works is different from year to year. They've finally settled on brake lever operates both front and back, pedal only operates rear. Some years models both operate both front and back (can be a concern at parking lot speeds).

2005 added Electronic Suspension (option).. Traction Control (Option).. Tire Pressure Monitoring (option).. about 15 more HP (from 95 - 110), more torque.. and just all around better performance

Bad stuff?

Check the Final Drive oil for metal flakes.. and if it's NEW oil, I'd be wondering why and asking questions.

you will have NO issues putting 100,000 miles on it if you take care of it. You'll want to attend a tech day to learn how to work on your bike and save HUGE money.

BMWs are great bikes but it's more of riding position than brand. If you've been off for 25 years, the old do it all UJM (universal Japanese motorcycle) has been re-born as the adventure touring bike. A sit up riding position with a go any where, do anything ability (with the proper accessories).

Agreed, what's passed off as a "standard" today is really sportbike lite. If you want ride like bikes of 25 years ago, you need an adventure or dual sport

Yeah the 1150 and 1200s are the style of bike I am looking at , I see a few of them driving around

My AV on the BMWBMW board was my plate on the bike.. "IAMBOB".. I got ALL kinds of e-mails from people that needed their bike serviced, or wanted trade in values.. when Can I test ride the newest BMW.. etc.. etc..

BUT (I think I've said this before) when my brother (IN IDAHO) sent me a picture of the 2002 RS with "Bob's BMW" in HUGE letters in the background, I took that as a sign from God, and I HAD to buy that bike!!

Oh, and I forgot to add the best part of doing your own services..

"WOW, $400?"

"Yeah $400, about what a new Stihl string trimmer costs (or any of a host of cool John Deere attachments). I'm going to Carroll's.. be back in a bit!!"
