I liked Van Halen a lot in the late '70s and through most of the '80s. But they morph into classic-rock dinosaurs in the '90s. As much as I couldn't stand Roth's ego, I admit that his anger and aggression helped balance Eddie and Alex's sunny-California attitude. Sammy's post-hippie philosophizing gradually sapped the band of its aggressive edge. Plus, after Nirvana, virtuoso guitar became passe.

At this point in their careers, can VH fill the MCI Center? As an analogy, Rob Halford has rejoined Judas Priest, and they're co-headlining Ozzfest instead of touring on their own.

I disagree. Roth was a cartoon character to me and VH was the epitome of showy pop-rock when I was a teen. Roth's antics tended to overshadow the talents of Eddie and crew. When Sammy came along, they became less of a "silly hair band" and notched their coolness factor up.

You really wanna know how stuck in the 80s he is? He thinks he can get a "pretty good" seat for $30! :killingme

I can always tell a Van Halen song on the radio because they all start the same way :guitar:

I used to like Van Halen, but I got better

Vrai, you're right when it comes to the VH image. Remember Friday Night Videos on NBC, when DLR gave some bizarre interviews? I think Roth's cartoonishness took full effect when he went solo. The "Yankee Rose" video is so over-the-top it's hilarious.

Still, the songwriting and the production in the Hagar era had less edge than the Roth era. I can't imagine Hagar writing dark stuff like "Mean Street" and "Running With the Devil" and "And the Cradle Will Rock." Albums like 5150 and OU812 were great, but more mellow in attitude.

I didn't even start listening to Van Halen until Sam,my joined them. Dave has some good songs, and I have seen him in concert a few times, but his ego is what killed his career.

Sammy just goes out to have a good time. I have seen Sammy nearly a dozen times since he left Van Halen. I have brought a few "non-Sammy fans" with me to his shows, and they were quickly transformed.

I understand that Dave had his fan base, and there are those die hard fans, but there's something to be said for a guy that can join a 20 year old band, and bring them not only their first number one single, but several number one albums.

If you have not seen Sammy in concert before, you'd be a fool to miss this tour.

I thought it was kinda hard to take him serious after his "california girls" video. :ohwell: though I'm sure the guys enjoyed the eye candy.

See, and that was the problem with DLR - he's a pop singer. "Running With the Devil" could have been a serious rock anthem but Roth popped it out and sugar-coated it.
