Vegetarian Firefighter Claims He Got Most Dangerous Assignments Because Of Diet: Gothamist

A vegetarian firefighter claims he's been harassed, given dangerous assignments, and reassigned because of his refusal to eat meat when he was stationed at Ladder 146 in Greenpoint. The alleged abuse got so bad that Anthony Harper, an eight-year veteran, has taken his story to the media. In an interview with the Post, Harper, 42, says he was ostracized—and worse—after he decided to give up meat and refused to pay for the communal meals at the firehouse.

.... especially ones where people do something to place themselves outside of a group and then discover they're treated like an outsider

He was being a jerk. You pay for your communal meals and eat the veggies.

And I bet he's some kind of panty waist to be b&m ing about being treated unfairly by having to act like a firefighter.

Honestly, I don't eat meat anymore and I don't make anybody cater to me.

What if he was Hindu and was discriminated against because Hindu's don't eat meat? Would that be any different?

No, but I bet the Hindu would have acted differently.

This guy set himself up to not be part of the team by not participating in communal meals. My co-workers and I have occassional pot lucks. I participate, and not because I want meatballs. And surprise, my co-workers actually make dishes that don't contain meat out of consideration for me. It's part of being a team.

He's a firefighter and he's supposed to do dangerous things as part of his job. If he doesn't want to do that, then he shouldn't be a firefighter.

Honestly, this guy comes across as a selfish crybaby jerk who doesn't play well with others.

I wouldn't want to work with him as a firefighter have my life depend upon him.

We have pot luck's at work it seems like every week and I don't participate. I can't eat what anyone prepares and most people have different sanitary practices than I do. But they know I'm a vegetarian germiphobe so they’ve thankfully stopped asking me to come to them. I'm friendly with everybody though, and maybe this guy was just a vegan prick.

They don't dislike him because he's a vegetarian; they dislike him because he's an ass.

Somehow I doubt he's the only firefighter who is vegetarian. He's just probably one of those who whines if he has to be in the same room with meat.

News flash - you have a right to choose what goes into your body. Your right ends when it impinges on the rights of others.

I'm not going to pay for everyone to eat if I'm not going to eat any of it.

I have food allergies. If they only ate food I'm allergic to, I'm not paying for it. If they have alternatives, I'm in :buddies:

That would be like you picking up someone's bar tab everyday, and you don't drink.

I think he went around it the wrong way, but I understand what he's saying.
