Vehicle Registration Renewal Question

So we never received the vehicle renewal notice from the MVA on our 2010 Focus. We are on vacation in South Carolina and headed to Georgia tomorrow. I happened to look at the tag for some unknown reason today and, YIKES, it expired 7/12. We only drive this car occasionally and never noticed the date on the tag. I usually only think about renewals when we receive the MVA letter. So we did an online renewal and printed a temporary registration. My question is, are there any kind of late fees, etc. associated with an expired registration? I did a search and from what I found the answer is, NO. I have never had this happen before so I don't know all the details. I just want to be prepared for anything that might come up.

If there was a late fee, it would have been itemized on the page that shows you the fees you were paying.

I just renewed mine online, and I'm pretty sure it stated that you couldn't renew online if you were overdue by so much time.

Are you originally from the Valley in California? Generally ending a spoken statement with a question mark or question inflection is an indicator.

Sorry. I was posting from my iPad and meant to use a period instead of a question mark. Not sure how that happened.

The message shown below is part of the email I recently received from the MVA. I provided my email address the first time I renewed tags online and since then I have received all notifications by email for all of the vehicles associated with my DL number.

Dear MVA Customer,

Thank you for providing us with your preferred email address. We will use this address to send you your next vehicle registration renewal notice in a few days. The email renewal notice will replace the paper notice you have previously received in the U.S. Mail. You are part of a growing number of Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) customers who are helping to reduce costs for the State of Maryland.

You can continue to help the environment and save costs by completing your vehicle renewal online. Full instructions on how to renew online will be emailed to you. Thank you, once again, for taking the time to help the MVA go green!

I renewed my registration for my Subaru online 2 years ago. I just renewed it again last month online. I still received my renewal notice by mail though. The Focus is registered in my husband's name. This is the first time we had to renew as the vehicle is only 2 years old. He has another vehicle also and never does his renewals online. We never received anything for the Focus at all. Maybe it was lost in the mail. Who knows?

My insurance company won't let me drop insurance until I bring them a receipt from the MVA for the tags. Said it is law.

I had no problem dropping Nationwide a year and a half ago when I switched to Erie. Is this something new?

If you drive fast enough the cops will never see that it's expired.

When you switched to Erie, they probably made absolutely sure, as they did with me, that your new policy started at the exact same time your old one expired.

I renewed mine a few days ago and did not receive that message via e-mail. I prefer to get a renewal notice by mail.
