When you switched to Erie, they probably made absolutely sure, as they did with me, that your new policy started at the exact same time your old one expired.

I told them that I was switching companies because their prices were too high. I had not switched yet. They had no problem cancelling my policy and they did not ask if I had proof.

Right. But Erie probably made sure the dates matched.

Seems to me Travelers didn't want confirmation when I canceled and switched to Erie.

Erie may have but my point was that Nationwide did not. Mikey said that his insurance company would not let him cancel his policy unless he had a receipt that he turned in his tags.

Yeah, caught that.... took me a while to remember the same thing with mine as yours. That was about 3 years ago.

That has to be a true statement. My wife is a very slow driver. I forgot to renew the tags on the car she drives. 2 days past the renewal date she was pulled over by one of St. Mary's finest (I lie). He told her she could not drive the car and it would have to be towed to the nearest public parking lot. She called me on her cell phone (while standing outside her car) and none too politely informed me I had better renew the registration on line and get it to her promptly. This happened very near were I work so I was able to renew on line and print out the new registration and get it to the Officer within about 15 minutes. He wrote her a $70 citation and proceeded to give me a lecture. Yea in one ear and out the other. Sorry, I have to be honest here and state that it actually never went in the first ear.
I offered to make arrangements for the wife to do community service instead of me having to shell out 70 bucks to pay her ticket but she mentioned something about using me for target practice so being the fantastic husband that I am, I just payed the darn fine for her.

I'm only repeating what Erie (Steve Mattingly Ins.) told me. All the cars I've owned and sold, they would not let me cancel until I sent them the tag receipt.

I had no problem dropping Nationwide a year and a half ago when I switched to Erie. Is this something new?

Proof of Insurance and Financial Responsibility

Before or at the time you register your car, you must file a form called FR-19 with the Motor Vehicle Administration. This is your proof of insurance. This form:

Is provided by your insurance company and may be faxed, mailed, or dropped off in-person at the MVA office.

States that you will maintain the coverage for as long as the car is registered.

The insurance company will contact the MVA if you drop your insurance. If you change providers, you must inform the MVA and send them a new FR-19; otherwise, the MVA will assume you have no insurance at all.
