Have had problems with Verizon phone service for the last 2 years or so. Put in at least 15 repair requests and nothing changes - every time it rains, there is no dial tone, just static. Beginning of the year I watched the Verizon van on my monitor driving down to my house, sat there for 20 seconds and went back out - nobody got out of the van. They left a message on my answering machine that the problem was fixed. In between now and then I put in at least 8 repair requests, and it was okay until a few days ago.
I depend on my land line because security system is on it and I explained that over and over to them.
I was fairly okay (much static) the last 2 snow days but now I have no dial tone at all, just noise.
Verizon, I think, is the biggest phone service around here, so where do I go to get better service.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

 Even if you change who you pay your phone bill to, whose wires are going to connect you to their service?

Yeah, I'm sure it's going to be Verizon. I''m just baffled why they don't put electric and phone lines underground to not be affected by weather conditions.

Put your security system on cellular. Besides when I be theifen the first thing I do is cut the phone line.

I have had exactly the same problem for years and have not been able to get Version to fix it. I have placed numorus service calls (4 in the last 3 months) and still have the probelm.

Two weeks ago I thought we may have made some head way, the tech showed up, after the normal two week response time, and found the wires in the box, near the street were underwater. He pulled the wires out of the water and cleaned up all the working connections in the box. And of course the problem was back yesterday during the storm.

The tech also said that there were only two, out of the five connections in the box still active. Seems like that most folks are leaving Version. If Version wants me to switch to Fios this is the wrong way to go about it. I am staying with cable. If I can't get this problem fixed I am going to cell only.

My brother uses a pre-paid cell phone on his boat's alarm system and it works great.

You're absolutely right. Do you know if ADT does that?

When I was able to talk to the technicians I was always told that SMECO is the culprit. When they fix electric lines they screw with the phone lines - whatever!!!!

I've been with Verizon for mega years and have never had one moments worth of trouble !

I have been with them for mega years also. But the last couple years have been not so good with them. Once it started it never stopped - that's when I realized their service sucked. I put in service orders online and get a repair date in 10 days - that is not acceptable. Then I call, raise hell, and a technician comes out the next day. But problem is still there, even though, they leave a message on my phone that the problem has been fixed.
Hope you never have a problem with your Verizon service.

I'm a former C&P, Bell Atlantic, Verizon tech and underground lines are just as prone to problems as above ground lines.

Micki, take it easy my friend. There is probably more than one problem on your line. These are called intermittent troubles and are very hard to find. A little patience on your part just might help. You should check for the problem at your "NID" in the event that it COULD be an inside wiring problem. In my 30 years with them, I've seen it on more than one occasion where the trouble was in a piece of inside wire in a place where water was getting to it.
I'm not siding with Verizon however, because hardwired customers (those on copper lines) now take a back seat to cellular ones. Their repair service is getting really bad these days but it's the price of "progress". Todays techs have less experience, more attitude and the company suffers from a lack of maintenance on their phone lines (all because of budget issues). The CEO can't make his $25 million if they spend money on the outside lines...
Keep us posted, ok?

I had the same problem with Verizon for 3 years. Every time it rained, we could not use the phone due to the static. We had technicians out here about 4 times. I finally called them and told them that I needed to have someone come out and fix my phone immediately because my 82 year old grandmother was living with me. I told them that if she got sick or had an accident we needed the d#@n phone to work and that if they couldn't fix it, I'd cut off my service and find one that worked. After that, they came right out and fixed it. No problems since then.

Maybe you should let them know you have an elderly or disabled person living with you.
