I have a 1960s motorcycle that I bought without any title over 10 years ago. What are the DMV hoops to jump through to get a new one ... so I can get tags?

Thanks!!!!

A buddy of mine had to use a company out of Las Vegas to get tags for his 50s Chevy when he bought it without a title. They check to make sure it wasn't stolen. Get tags from a state that doesn't require a title, I believe it's Vermont. Then you can take the registration to the MVA and they will title it in Maryland.

I'm not sure what Maryland does.

In My Opinion
If you have a bill of sale that would be good.
call the state police and have them run a check on the VIN
get it inspected
go to DMV with documents and get it titled in your name.

its how I did it in Virginia years ago

Unfortunately you are stuck. Maryland does not honor bills of sale. If you have a VIN then you need to look into the out-of-state companies that can get you a title in their state and then take the new title to the MVA to get your MD title. If you do not have a VIN, then you can try to route of calling it homebuilt, go to the MVA site for more info on that procedure.

As for the companies that can get you a "new" title, there are a few out there just look for them on Google or in Hemmings. The company that I was going to deal with for such an issue was in Alabama. I managed to sell my car onto another person before I went that route. My neighbor has done this process a few times and he swears by it.

Depending on how old it is, it wont have a VIN.

My '60s bikes had a serial number on the column which was used as VIN.

Before you invest to much time, go talk to the local Tag and Title. they may have an easy answer for you.

MD uses the number on the engine case as the "VIN" on older bikes..like my '47 Harley, for example.

In my experience, MD is beyond hopless for getting a "new" title for any vehicle unless its a boat or trailer. I use the out of state title companies on occassion and am, in fact, using one right now to obtain title to a vintage Triumph sports car I'm restoring.

It's a bit time consuming and its also expensive ..almost 800 bucks for the Triumph title work, for example and then I still have to pay to have it transferred to MD and then registered.
