Those students were high-achieving young people who probably WOULD have made a positive difference in the world. They were gunned down by a nutjob for no reason and that is tragic. At least they were on track to get out of their parents' basements.

I'm not saying they weren't.

But their accomplishments, likely, wouldn't have changed the world. Unless they invented a cure for the common cold, their affect, positive as it may be, is only minor.

I'm sure they were all great people - I just hate how everytime someone dies these people come up with the overdramatic stuff.

I guess the truth is, overall, I'm sick of hearing about Virginia Tech. :dead:

For the past year, everyone's :blahblah: about changing gun laws and everything else because of Virginia Tech (which was a gun-free zone in the first place).

Call me cynical or whatever, but there have been much more important stories in the past year than Virginia Tech. Still, everywhere I go, everyone has to stick the VT ribbon in my face.

Good. I hope the next time someones sticks a vtech ribbon in your face they will go the extra mile and shove it down your throat so you choke and then nobody can come to your funeral and say how the world will miss you because nobody will miss you. in fact there would probably be rejoice in these forums.

i agree they were on the right track to bettering themselves, its horrible for someone to force their will upon someone else by taking their life, but not everyone that comes out of college makes a impact. there are 100's of thousands of people that don't achieve anything after graduating college and many that try like hell to still get by. And many people that don't step a foot in school and make far better role-models

not dissing college students by any means, because i am a part-time student myself, but they make these surviving students out to be heros. i'm willing to bet less than 2% of the student body even witnessed this event with their own eyes.

I agree with what you are saying....it's like everything else in the media, they play it out until they kill it, then they play it out some more.....I felt the same way when the football season started and they made a huge deal out of it on ESPN...i was thinking, "Like any of those players were anywhere near the engineering wing." granted i'm being cynical and not 100% serious but you get what i am saying.

And as much of an A$$ as it might make me sound, i disagree with the whole changing the world thing. The kind of person that changes the world stands up and does something, they don't sit there and wait to get gunned down.

I hate to admit it, but you are dead on.

Believe it or not, they were only 32 people.

There are over 3,000 troops dead in Iraq. The media and the politicians don't come out on camera and say they've made a difference for the Iraqi people or for our nation. Instead, they bash the war.

I'm not taking anything away from the kids here, it's aimed at the anti-war politicians that made these statements today.

how many individuals can really be said to have "changed the world?" I have great sympathy for all those involved and their families but statistically speaking, they probably wouldn't have had a major impact on the world as a whole. on those around them, absolutely but not the world.

besides, who's to say the change they made would have been for the better?

There were students that stood up and tried to stop this madman. Some lived, some died. But, the media says, instead, that the dead students would've changed the world. They :blahblah: about the terrorist who killed them all. We don't actually hear the good stories in Virginia Tech about the people who DID change lives.

Well, I think it's just in the news now because it's the anniversary of the shooting and they are having a ceremony. And there might be so many VT ribbons on cars around here because there are lots of alumni and people who have kids that attend VT around here?

I haven't noticed it in the news very much except for the first VT football game on ESPN and I didn't have a problem with that. It was a major event at that school so why wouldn't they bring it up during the first game of the first season afterwards?

:yeahthat:

I have no problem with the kids that were killed. None of them did anything to deserve it. They may have gone on to be very successful. Their accomplishments would be astounding.

But it makes me really lose a lot of respect for a situation when someone says they would've changed the world. There's no way I can sit here and imagine these kids becoming MLK or Abe Lincoln. That one statement, made by VA. Gov. Tim Kane, caused the whole VT situation to lose all credibility in my book.

That was probably the most ridiculous statement of the day. I have no problem saying they were great people, but the fact is he was only thinking about himself. He was trying to come up with a great line that would earn him a spot on the highlight reel when Dateline plays their 3 minute timeline of pictures and quotes put to the sappy music. He probably succeeded.

You don't need to overexaggaratte a person's ability, kindness and potential to make a great speech or to have them sound like a good person. The best speech anybody's made about Virginia Tech was the "We are Virginia Tech" speech made by Nikki Giovanni at the convocation ceremony last year. Very powerful, but not an overstatement. Those words stuck with me more than any of the trumped up :bs:.

It deserves to be news, as does the ceremony. But please, just spare me of the changing the world comments.

Kaine saying that just left a bad taste in my mouth. And, unfortanently, the media ran this story way into overdrive.
