I went from a xp machine to a vista at work, I didn't like vista at first but now that i've used it, I don't have any problems with it, only if ups upgraded to vista everything would be perfect. There are a lot of nice features to vista and I never really have any problems with it, but still prefer the mac over all of it.

Vista has a lot of nifty features...but they are all aesthetic memory hogs. I still use XP...and probably will until all new software is compatible with both.

Linux > all, imo

If I wanted Vista without all the problems, i.e. drivers, I'd get a Mac.

Why can't Micro$oft come up with an operating system that actually WORKS?

And why can't Apple come up with a hardware scheme where everything isn't proprietary? The graphic cards that are available for a Mac are about 3 revisions behind those available for a PC. Plus software available professionally for anyone outside the graphics field is pretty nasty and not compatible with any of the 90% of the other users out there.

Ok, I purchased a new HP laptop this last Fri., from Staples. It's a Pavilion dv9810us, with 3 gigs of ram, 160 gig hard drive, Amd duo core chip, 2.0 gig speed, wireless, DVD burner, Vista Home Premium, etc. It was $300.00 off regular price, so I went for it.

I set it up Sat/Sun, and got my mail accounts set up, it all looked OK.

Then, I received a flurry of Windows Updates - they're ready for you to download!

One of them really messed up my new laptop - bigtime. It blew away my internet connection, for one thing. I ended up having to do a System Restore - to 2 days earlier!

I have shut down Auto Updates for now. So far, so good.

My experience (admittedly a n00b) is if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Automatic updates mess up your computer more than help.

I haven't discovered any advantages of Vista.

Hey Willie, how ya doing? :howdy:

After shutting down Automatic Updates, this laptop seems(?) to be functioning at a more reliable pace. I'm not crazy about Vista, but at least there are no more surprises when I restart Windows - like from last night until this morning! I was not sure what would be still working!

Such as WTF happened to my wireless internet connection? Certain programs just would not load up.

I Logged on this morning, and everything was the same as last night. I could not boast that for the first 2-3 days. I downloaded Firefox/Mozilla this afternoon, and that program is functioning alright, as far as I can tell.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

My Vista experience made me so mad that I'm changing one of my computers over to Linux, and if I like that environment well enough, I'll change them all.

XP is a good OS.

While I'm at it, I'll say I have a very strong dislike for Office 2007 as well.

Didn't all existing peripherals (printers. etc.) need new drivers that didn't exist?

Everything I had connected to my XP computer worked just fine with Vista. Vista automatically downloaded a couple updated drivers for me when I first booted it....but it wasn't an inconvenience or anything.

I did have to get a new photo management program, as the one I had wasn't compatible with Vista, but I was looking for an excuse to get another one anyways.

XP for me! I got a shiny new Dell XPS with Vista and I finally got so frustrated with incompatibilty issues that I dialed it back to XP Pro. Solved all my problems.

Well, except for that strange rash...

I noticed that not many people said they liked Vista. The most common statement was that they got used to it. To me that is a sad commentary for an operating system that was supposed to bring so many improvements to PC owners.

I bought a Vista ready HP about a year and a half ago and upgraded to Vista when it was released to the public in early '07. Immediately upon installation, my HP all-in-one printer would no longer work with my HP computer. It took more than a month of calls to Rangoon tech support for me to realize that they were not prepared to cope with the Vista changes. By late summer a new driver was finally issued for the printer.

Then a little at a time other quirky things started going wrong. Almost everytime I tried to close IE7 it would give me a failure message and let me know that it was restarting forcing me to cancel the action if I didn't want it to restart. Switched to using Firefox most of the time after that. Then the desktop started refreshing on its own about every 5-10 minutes. I tried solving that problem for about 3 months and finally gave up. This slowed the computer down and if I had the All Programs stack open, it would close.

I finally admitted defeat and did a system restore to Windows XP this weekend and I'm feeling much better now.

as much as you hate it, you will eventually have to get used to it.

I don't see why. Microsoft just released SP3 for XP, PC vendors have successfully lobbied Microsoft into allowing new systems to ship with XP, Windows 7/Vienna/whatever they're calling it now, is right around the corner, and other OS's are gaining in popularity not only with whiz kids but with the general public as well.

That's FAR from having to get used to Vista.

Business section of the Washington Post also announced over the weekend that even though XP distribution would end in '08, they have extended support for Dell, HP and other companies for new installations on their computers through 2010 and will continue to retail XP as well. Sounds like it will be around for sometime to come.
