Vista

BG's new HOTPINK laptop came with Vista on it..

So far I like it.. though their security can be a little infuriating at times.

EVERY 5 seconds when i first started with it a security message would pop up about something I was doing, or something I wanted to do...

You can disable User Account Control off if you want - it is the final check Windows does before you make a system change logged in as any user other than Administrator.

Start | Control Panels | User Accounts | Turn User Account Control on or off

Uncheck 'Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer | reboot...

Your system will biatch for a bit in the lower right about UAC being turned off, but after a week or so the little balloon will stop telling you about it.

Vista sounds like a real PITA. I think I'll wait on a new computer until Windows 7 comes out.

We first tested VISTA and it blew chunks as it was a tremendous resource hog. After Service Pack 1 it runs really, really quick and is VERY stable. We are now recommending people move towards it as new computers are purchased.

As far as a PITA, not really - it is keeping Joe User from messing things up. If you are a seasoned windows user, turn off these checks and balances built in (like UAC) and march forward. :yay:

Remember, Windows 7 public beta comes out in January or February, and the new O/S is scheduled for release later in '09 which means SP1 will follow first quarter of '10. Do you really think MS is going to release a perfect product first go around? We are primarily a Windows shop and we always wait for the first Service Pack before we deploy to the masses.

Go with Vista if you are already a MS user, you will not be disappointed.

Disable UAC.
Disable Aero.
Disable Sidebar.
Switch your performance value to "Best Performance".
Run everything as admin.

That is all anybody has to do to make vista run smooth as butter.

Yeah, okay.
Thanks for all the responses. I was trying to decide if I needed to prepare myself for computer learning all over! Sounds like I should be okay.

That's fine for the home user, but she may not have that option, if the computer is being supplied and supported by an IT dept. It may be locked down like NMCI.

most companies don't give users admin access on their computers

Very good point, but I would think (read: hope) that the company would take care of disabling all of those "glitter" features in order to get the most bang for their bucks out of their systems...but if they are just getting around to updating then I'm not overly confident in the IT dept.

And how do you find these things on Vista??

Watched a Blu Ray movie last night on it, and it automatically shuts down Aero.. but starts back up again once the movie is over.

Sounds like it needed more resource than you had available. Or maybe the player just didn't have the Aero hooks.
