Wandering in the woods....

I've been tracking my fawn and white beagle since 11 am. She escaped through the electric fence and is out in the woods between Indian Bridge and the State Park. I tracked her with another beagle friend of ours but we ran into the river and too many stickers and thorns. I heard her about an hour before giving up for now. She had to have been within 500 yards of the road. When I called for her, she went quiet, which is what she normally does. She's not the brightest. So, if you live in the area and spot a fawn beagle please call for her. She's a sweetheart and loves everyone. She may end up in a yard with dogs.

There is a number on her tag and my email address. The phone # is a verizon cell. If you incur any costs, I will be glad to reimburse you. I'm currently going through a not so good time and this doesn't help my outlook right now.

I'm hoping she ends up back at the house... The fence is off for now and the other (smarter??) dogs are locked inside the house.

Thanks ahead of time if you are able to help. I will post when and if she turns up.

Got home from Easter dinner and she was waiting in the carport sulking....

She was also coverd with thorns... I'll tell you what, beagles aren't very bright.... I've spent an hour so far picking and combing them out... Thanks for the well wishes. With the weather getting warmer, I'm going to have to keep her in the kennel... I really hate to do that but she can't be trusted any longer.

 Beagles were bred to chase rabbits through thorny underbrush. She was just doing her thing! Glad she's back.

I've got a wireless electric fence setup you can borrow to try out. Instead of breaking the line, getting the shock and then home free, if they go outside the boundary, they get a correction shock every 30 seconds until they return. It works great, stopped my brittany spaniel from running off. Since I had t o put my dog down, I'm not using it anymore.

What if they keep running away? Why would they return? Do they get out of range?

How much does something like this run? and you buy more than one collar more multiple dogs?

that's exactly what we have but I think there is a spot that she has discovered without any signal coverage. The transmitter was off when returned and her collar was beeping but not shocking.... I may have to get a new collar and/or another transmitter. I'm living with friends who have 3 dogs and they learned quick... Mine has been on and off the collar for 4 years and she isn't afraid of the shock if she sees a rabbit or deer. If I'm outside and yell at her, she'll stop and return but it seems like she's running off more and more lately.... usually she runs into the thorns and runs around in circles as if she's chasing a scent but once she realizes that she'll be running back through thorns, she stays outside of the fence. I think she had enough time Sunday morning to wander off. She came back with the fence off so hopefully the collar is still working. I tested it this morning and it seemed to be working fine.

Between 2 and 3 hundred at Petco and about 50 dollars per extra collar... batteries need to be replaced about every 2 or 3 months depending on how often the dog gets to the edge of the signal. You can adjust the radius of the fence too. Actually not a bad system if the dog is smart.

I found my beagle running around rte 5 trying to get hit by a car a few years ago.... I'm fairly certain she wasn't chasing a rabbit at the time.

Right now we are using the 'Petsafe' wireless fence sold at Petco... I had a friend who had one several years ago who used the identical system... Is the one you are talking about different???

It's not fair to say your beagle isn't smart. It sounds to me like she's very smart. She's just a beagle. It sounds like she's a great rabbit dog (rabbits run in circles, so she's definitely trailing a scent). She's a beagle, and her instincts are taking over. Their sense of smell is so strong, that it's probably too much for her to just ignore. Not all dogs are the same, and not all training and fencing techniques work on every dog. It sounds like she needs a physical barrier for her safety.

She sounds smart to me and she figures taking the "hit" is worth it for the fun she gets from the chase. That's why I don't like electric fences to be the only form of containment.

That, and any other animals can come in your yard as they please.

Well, if you've got about 20 grand or more for a fence to contain the yard then you are more than welcome to donate it. I had the perfect yard for her until my landlord decided to sell the house.... moved into Hickory Hills for a year and things were ok during the warmer months.... she's a miss priss and refuses to go outside in the snow or rain unless I basically carry her out....

The current situation is great because she has 3 other dogs to hang out with and my housemates and I share in the responsibility of all 4... Everything works fine 99.99 percent of the time... it's that .01 percent when I'm at my second job and she decides to become miss non priss that I have to worry about. It's a good thing she is cute. She's spoiled and she's my best friend...
