My concern is how they knew about the purchase in the first place. It's possible that AmEx really did call me, because they referenced a legitimate purchase. But again, the purchase wasn't unusual nor was it a large dollar amount - no reason in the world for it to be flagged and they've never called about any other purchases I've made.

RodRugg said:Wow! That is a crazy scam and something to be aware of. Also to be aware of is this scam: A couple of weeks ago this guy showed up at our house dressed up like SMECO and saying he needed to look at our meter or whatever. My dad was suspicious and asked him what was the most common voltage rating of electrolytic capacitors and how much electricity it would take to kill an elephant. He couldn't answer them questions and my grandma came running to the door and fired hot bacon grease right in his face. She always keeps hot bacon grease in a potpourri thing in case she has somebody who tries to scam her or rob her or run over her petunias with a bicycle. Anyways that guy left screaming and about two hours later this lady called pretending to be from SMECO and saying that they were gonna get us arrested and slap us with lawsuits or whatever. My grandma says they were probably robbers or gypsies or drug takers and she said next time they try that she was just gonna fistfight their heads off right on the front porch. Well, that's a scam to watch out for too when people show up at your house pretending to be somebody.
