To be fair, your kids probably didn't measure the temperature of the sun directly. They probably relied on someone to tell ....
Unless I personally perform every investigation - this is how almost all knowledge of every stripe is promulgated. We rely on information others have gathered to make decisions. We try to corroborate this with other reliable sources, and use logic, reasoning and some of our own observation to confirm knowledge.

This doesn't excuse someone from seeing us land on the moon yet believe it's a gas, or thinking that islands tip over (yes, I know that was Hank Johnson, but you get the picture).

So often I want to believe that politicians saying tremendously absurd things are taken out of context - sarcasm, edited badly, joking, exaggeration - because they HAVE the education credentials to suggest they shouldn't actually think this.

But if they really are this dreadfully ignorant, it's a bit horrifying that they're running this country.

This puts both the original, where she mentions the moon specifically three times and gas twice, and the "correction" where she says she was talking about the sun.
Nothing about her original statement, nor her retraction and correction makes any kind of sense - but it does of course, take the opportunity to blame or sneer at Republicans and conservatives for calling her out on it. Actually if anything, her "explanation" just compounds the gravity of her ignorance.

It's like in the movies, when some dimwit says something dumb and says "did I say that? I meant THIS..." only for the correction to ALSO be wrong.

Exactly. At least Hanks staff covering for Gaum tipping over makes some sort of sense. Whereas this is just an extra helping of stupid. She should have let her staff take a day to concoct something better.

My gut feeling is that - most of the words proceeding from many of our politicians - if they sound cogent at times - but when speaking off the cuff sound dumb as a post - then you're seeing the real person, and the fake erudition comes from statements prepared for them.

I have heard that Hank was being funny - but has such an incredibly dry delivery it was perceived as in earnest. I know LOTS of people whose sense of humor is exactly like that. They do usually give a small smile to let on that they know what they're saying.

That was the other part of the cover. Have you seen the clip? Watch the whole thing.

SJL is dreadfully ignorant. AOC is dreadfully ignorant. Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib are dreadful terrorist molls who want to destroy America. Chuck Schumer has the self-control of an 8 year old with ADHD. Joe Biden is a vindictive nasty bully.

The best thing about Twitter is that you get to see these people in their own words. Sure, they have staffers who write blahblah, but frequently they speak out themselves and what they say is what they are. It's the height of ignorance to go, "Oh, Twitter...pffft...who cares about that?" but we should all care because these are our country's leaders, boldface and unfiltered.

I have said many times about politicians and celebrities that we respect them and think they're our betters, but that's because we don't know them. All we see is their fame and PR. In reality you wouldn't have these people in your home or around your children. They are completely dreadful and socially unacceptable as normal everyday people define it.

Can anyone who is familiar with Congress please tell me what person in the Congressional Black Caucus stands out for their intelligence?
They have many standouts like Ms. Lee and old Hank, Barbara Waters, Eleonor Holmes Norton, The cowgirl Whatsername Wilson, Good old Kweazy Mfume. Yes they have standouts, but not many who stand out for their intelligence. Probably the slickest is the leader of the democrat party who was picked as their leader because of his color and not his brain is Hakeem Jeffries,

This is my point though, what if they didn't see it? What if they don't believe your sources. That makes them ignorant in your eyes but doesn't necessarily equate to intelligence. I merely took issue with you calling people stupid because they have different beliefs than yours based wholly on what other people tell them because most cannot measure it themselves.

Remember, MOST OF THE WORLD think you are ignorant for believing in the Christian God. But under your logic, that actually makes you stupid as well.

To be fair, your kids probably didn't measure the temperature of the sun directly. They probably relied on someone to tell them how hot it is (maybe even you). So someone missed that day in class, or that entire grade, then it's possible they might never "know" what the moon is made of or how hot the sun is because it's not something most people can empirically measure/taste/touch. But that wouldn't make them stupid, just ignorant.

And I know more than one aeronautical engineer (objectively intelligent people) who would believe you were stupid for thinking the sun and moon are physical bodies at all.

There are people in this forum who think you would have to be stupid to take the C19 vaccine, though "objective science" sides on the side of it being the safe and smart thing to do.

Measuring intelligence based on "knowing" something that someone else told you isn't really all that useful. That's why that test you quoted (the IQ test) doesn't ask any questions like "how hot is the sun" or "is the moon made of cheese" or "which of these frequencies corresponds to red light and which to green", because that would be a test of knowledge not intelligence.
Lost us at its the safe thing to do
