We can't even discriminate against grocery bags.

 I guess it wouldn't be nice to hurt their feelings.

SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco may become the first city in the nation to charge shoppers for grocery bags.

The city's Commission on the Environment is expected to ask the mayor and board of supervisors Tuesday to consider a 17-cent per bag charge on paper and plastic grocery bags. While the goal is reducing plastic bag pollution, paper was added so as not to discriminate.

SFW used to do that. You still have to pack your own at most of the SFW. (Not in BL's store)

When they first opened, they charged 3 cents per bag for paper. Plastic bags didn't exist at the time. When cheapo plastic bags became available, they stopped charging.

I wonder if they are only taxing grocery bags or smaller bags? When I was out there, there were people mad about the ammount of condoms discarded in San Francisco parks and streets. I am sure with the boihazard suits and stuff it costs the city more than 5.1 cents to pick them up. I hope they don't try to recycle them.

I'll bet that at least a few folks out there.....the ones with a bit of commonsense.....are pretty embarassed by now. It was probably Barbara Boxer's idea.:duh:

This is just dumb. It's an environmental excuse to make a cheap dollar for the stores...I will believe nothing else.

The stores are not profiting by this. It all goes to the govenmental agency that dreamed (nightmared?) this up.

So it's like most recycling programs. Penn and Teller did an episode of Bull$hit about recycling. Their conclusion was that the only good recycling is aluminum. The rest is costly and actually hurts the environment because of the extremely toxic chemicals required to recycle.

Here's a link to the synopsis of the Recycling episode.
