Weekend getaway

Spent the weekend at River Creek Lodge on St. George Island and it was fantastic! It's owned by the same people who own Evans restaurant, which is right next door, and they've really done a nice job. :yay:

The rooms are gorgeous, each with a balcony overlooking either the St. George River or the Potomac, and very comfortable. LARGE bedrooms and bathrooms, a little kitchenette, premium bedding and towels. This morning they had a breakfast buffet at Evans that was excellent. Even with the arctic weather, it was a very cozy little hideaway.

Hats off to Bree, Brian, Geneva, Harry, Shawnee and everyone else who made our weekend such a relaxing pleasure.

So if you want to get away for a mini vacation but can't really "go" away, or you want a romantic evening with your honey (Anniversary? Valentine's Day?), this is where you want to be. I will definitely be going back! It is less than 15 miles from my house, but I felt like I was in another world.

We stopped in there on a Poker Run this summer. Awesome place. I hope they make it but don't see how because they're so out of the way. I'm definately stopping there by boat this summer.

Sounds like a great place. With hubby's crazy work schedule, we're always looking for new places that we can go for a quick overnight/2 night getaway. We'll have to check it out sometime.

ditto - thanks for the review. We are always looking for quick little places too... and since I was born and bred on the Eastern Shore (which has a lot of nice little weekend getaways as well....) I like to look for places elsewhere. I've never even heard of this place - but it sounds nice.

What is in the area? Anything to do for one day?

Only if you want to fish from shore. Other than that, it's in BFE.

YET you are 15 minutes from civilization if you get bored, which we didn't. If it weren't so friggin' cold, I'd have sat on the balcony overlooking the creek and read all day. As it stands, we went back and forth between Evans and the lodge. Had to run home Saturday morning because of kitties and some work I had to get done, and it was very cool and convenient that I could do that, then come back to my vacation.

Friday night we sat by the fireplace in Evans and ate/drank/listened to music. Saturday night they had Dylan Galvin there to entertain us. This was pure relax and decompress time. (Although I still got some work done because they have highspeed internet :jet:)

Here's the sunrise from our balcony yesterday morning:

I feel SO stupid... I didn't even realize that this place is in St. Mary's Co.

We've only lived here for a couple of years - obviously we haven't checked out this area yet.

but it really does sound like a nice getaway - I'm not sure I could convince hubby to spend money to stay somewhere that is 20 minutes from where we live. Maybe a night if the rooms were really nice, but I doubt it.

$130 a night, which was more than reasonable for what we got. This is not a Motel 6 - the beds were plush, the rooms very spacious, fully equipped kitchenette, large balcony with two Adirondack chairs overlooking the water, two flatscreen TVs, separate bedroom, etc. There's a breakfast station in the lobby with pastries, juice, oatmeal, sandwiches, etc.

I'm pretty sure they'll charge more than that in season, but even if it's $200/night, that's still a lot less than what you'd spend for similar accommodations anywhere else.

Could you smoke on the balcony?

Looking at the website, it definitely looks like a $150+ a night place... the rooms and balcony look really nice. It is nice that it is so close (like if you leave the kids with a sitter or something for a night and need to run home) but on the other hand, I don't think my hubby would spring for a $150 a night place when we live in a nice place that is about 25 minutes away

I see that you can get a kayak though - are there little inlets that you can kayak on nearby? That's a nice thing to offer with the rooms...

But it's definitely a vacation and perfect for people like me who want to go away but really can't *be* away. So like on your anniversary or some other special occasion, it would be a nice treat to get a room for the night. And to me it would be perfect for people with kids at home because you're away, and you feel away, but you can get back quickly if you need to.

Outstanding. We nibbled and noshed a lot. The Sunday brunch is worth making the trip - bacon, sausage, sausage gravy, grits, potatoes, biscuits, pancakes, etc, on the buffet, then you choose one entree (omelet, steak and eggs, fritatta, etc) from a menu, plus you get a Bloody Mary or a mimosa, $14.95.

Everything was very fresh and well-prepared. :yay:

Well I for one will be going back. It is by far the best place I've been in St. Mary's County. Actually, all three counties that make up Southern MD. They also make the best bloody mary in the whole wide world. :yay:
It's awesome down there. Very scenic. I can't wait to get there this summer. I hope they make it.

I agree totally - I'd spring for it just to feel like I was getting 'away' from the mundane househould stuff... and yes, we do have kids so it would be nice to be close - we could actually get a good sitter and not have to take them 3 hours away to stay with family just so we can go away for the weekend. If we aren't going to be close by, I just don't feel comfortable leaving them with anyone other than my Mom. But if we were half an hour away, I wouldn't mind having a sitter stay the night - and it would be nice to not have to plan so much just to get away.

My hubby might agree to a weekend away - I'll just have to really emphasize the 'romantic' aspect of it and give him a little incentive to spring for the room I guess. :smoochy:

Thanks for mentioning the place though Vrai - we've never been to St. George's Island and I didn't even know the place was there - let alone how nice it is.

I love St. George Island anyway and go for drives and walks down there all the time. In fact, that's how we ended up at Evans/River Creek in the first place - totally unplanned. I told Larry to come walk with me and I'd buy him a beer at Evans after. He said, hey, why don't we stay the weekend at the lodge? And I couldn't think of one reason why not.

So we ran back home, packed a bag, and off we went. :yay:
