Weis's rant

My understanding is that a purpose built Weis is very different than what we have here.

Basically Weis has grown aggressively by buying distressed, or unwanted stores off other companies. They just bought all the Mars in Baltimore, which was a pretty big chain.

From what I have been told, when they buy a store, they don't change it too aggressively because they don't want to chase off the existing customer base. Rather they change things over time. Problem is..Food Lion was not all that nice. I think what the main issue is..they have expanded so rapidly, that they now don't have the money to make the changes they want.

I haven't been happy with the new Weis's stores.
First of all, I don't like all of the price gimmicks.
I want to buy what I need at a fair price, and I don't want to do math at each item to figure out the actual price.
Maybe 4 for $5, or 3 for $5, or 8 for $10 is a good deal, but just tell me the fricking price.
And maybe I want one, but I don't need 5.
And there's the Pick 5 thing. Again, I don't want to search the store for 5 things that qualify, in order to get a better price.
So I keep coming home from the store with 4 of this, and 5 of that... because I want the best price available to me.
... so I find myself playing the game.

Today was the grand finale - I'm not going back.
After getting home and studying my ridiculously long receipt (another weird thing about this store).
I bought 4 fajita spice packs for $5. But I paid $5.56, not to mention I didn't need 4 packs!
I bought 2 packs of hamburger patties from the fresh meat section that were clearly marked on sale for around $5.50 each.
I actually paid over $8.00 each, with a 15 cent discount on each pack. WTF???

My husband told me to take the burgers back just on the principle of it.
But I'm keeping my $8.00 packs of burgers, and not going back.

Not to mention, they are over-priced on most things that I usually buy.

Grrrr..... I really wanted to like this store.

We don't mind the one in the Poconos that we go to when we're there. There's another store closer, but the Weis is cleaner and the clerks are friendlier. Haven't noticed a price problem, but I will say that Weis isn't the only using the "this price for this many" gimmick. I see it in Safeway, Shoppers....I don't go to Giant too much because I hate their meat selection and their produce selection stinks, so I don't know what they're doing. Store of choice is Safeway, but same thing - there's a price on the shelf, a price for loyal customers and a price for those using their app. It gets tiresome.

I don't pay attention to sales when I grocery shop.
After reading this thread I had to dig out my last Weis cash register slip.
Green peppers 2@4/5.00 2.50
Cucumbers 2@4/5.00 2.50

11 items discounted at the bottom of the slip for using the store card? Including the peppers and cucumbers reducing their price to $1 each.
Don't see any problem.

Awesome. That's great for you. Meanwhile I bought two hostess cakes off of a table with a large sign at the top that said "Hostess Cakes, $1.99", and when I got home I found I had paid $5.99 a piece for them.

$5.99!?

They aren't even half that at 7-11 or any other gas station/convenience store. That's nuts.

Sorry, let me clarify. These weren't the single serving pies. These were 6-count carrot cake boxes. I think $5.99 is the normal retail on them. The table had an assortment of hostess products, all of which I think are referred to as "snack cakes".

Sounds just like the Entenmann's situation I posted about. Trick you into thinking you're getting a great deal based on the sign, but they don't ring up the sale price.

Oh. Good lord I was about to ask if they were gold plated.

The Giant in Lusby sucks big time so I shop at Weis in Solomons. You really have to watch for expired products because they sure don't. Recently, it was some sausage and yogurt past use/sell by date.
Their produce section is hit or miss (which is what I buy a lot of) but better than Giant's. Their staff is usually friendly and many of the *mature* cashiers do a great job of bagging.
They sure do throw a lot of stuff away, though. I have mentioned it before about the amount of stuff I see being hauled to the dumpsters.
Since they are the grocery store furthest south in Calvert, it is doubtful they will close. There are a lot of people from Solomons and Dowell that shop there.

The Callaway store just added a pharmacy so it's not going to close. The California store closing doesn't surprise me. Too many other choices withing what amounts to walking distance.
The irony is that the California Weis was the only local Weis that was worth shopping at.

I used to shop at the Lex Park Food Lion more than once per week. I may stop in the Lex Park Weis maybe once a month now - I actively avoid the store now.

My wife shopped at the Lex Park store just before Christmas. First time in a looooong time. She was surprised that Lex Park had different items in it that the Callaway store did.

When we are in Solomons that Weis is right across the street from us, but it's so crappy I'd go the extra distance to Giant. Every time I shopped at Weis I ended up with something moldy or rotten, plus the store itself is unpleasant.

I actively avoid the Callaway Weiss, although that location was my go-to when it was Food Lion. I really do not like Weiss. I find the prices high & the store itself very unpleasant. Sadly they kept many of the former employees most of which, particularly the adults, I find pretty worthless. The younger folks in the store at least demonstrate a modicum of energy & helpfulness. The store is dirty & not well kept. I go to Aldi at least once a week & round out my shopping at Shoppers in San Souci. I find that store to be pretty well stocked, not crowded & the employees are always helpful
I'd be happy to see Weiss go
