Welding Projects

Well I got a little Mig Welder for my B-day. After playing with it for a month I'm all outa stuff to fix. Been looking online for project ideas, I found a set of plans to build a toy Backhoe for a kid so I thought about making a bigger one. Can anyone out there help me think of something to build or point me to a site with different welding projects????

As soon as I get off my a** and fab up some exhuast brackets, you can weld 'em to my car if you like

Don't know dude, what do you want to make? What other fab tools do you have?

I have saws and basic tools, no cutting torch or plasma cutter. I found one thing I can build. My cousin needs a rack in the house to hold firewood, so I'm gonna build one with wheels and a solid bottom to keep the bark in so they can roll it on the deck load it with wood then reel it back into the house. Just looking for little projects like that, I already made a 4 hot dog cooker thats 10 feet long.

I'm not a big fan of using torches to cut stuff. I was thinking more along the lines of a steel work table, drill press, vice(s), angle and die grinders, band saw, etc. Suggestions are kinda limited if I don't know what capacities you have.

If don't have the steel work table, you could make one of those to make your projects easier. You could build metal shelving/storage units for your garage. Build a stainless tub, or "hot-tank" for cleaning parts. Use your imagination, there's always something you need/want that you could build.

Set up is small, so it can be portable. I can take care of light duty welding but when it comes to heavy duty I have friends with welding shops for that.

LIke a rack that would slide into a reece hitch to support it???
I was thinking of something like a ladder rack that extends over the cab, mounts to the bed rails.

Hook me up Magnum!! I have a favorite stainless steel cooking pot that I need a handle welded back onto... I would be most appreciative and willing to pay.......

Same here, I got the Craftsman Mig Welder. So far it seems great for little stuff. So far I've fixed Lawn Mowers, Metal Stools, Stuff on my truck, just little things like that. The Welder was $200, it comes with a little face shield but I bought a good helmet.

On your new truck?
You could probably buy one that is already made for cheaper than one could be built. To make a rack like that the cost of the steel would be pretty high.

You're not going to believe this, but I had a dream about this last night. I had a whole bunch of ideas for you, but by the time I made it to...wherever in the dream world you were...I'd forgotten all of them. I started trying to concoct something on the spot; it wasn't working too well when the dream ended.

But I've wanted for a long time to someday scratch-build a steam locomotive model that actually runs on steam. It would be fairly large scale, measuring maybe 4 feet long and 3 feet tall. The frame and pilot (cowcatcher), the connecting rods and the boiler and the firebox, and possibly the cylinders, would all have to be welded items.

That would be neat, I think I'd need more practice to build something like that. I had an Idea last night also but I'm haveing a hard time finding the material I will need. Have you seen those little metal dog cages that sell for like $100, Well I figure if I can get a 4'x8' sheet of the wire then I could make my own and sell them.
