how can you tell if your well is dry or almost dry?

No ... I was taking a shower and the water just stopped and air started coimng out then I turned off the water and turned it back on and brown water started coming out and then it cleared up but still have alot of air in the lines

I had a well go dry on me bout 5 years age and I don't recall any warnings or odor before it went dry. I just simply ran our of water. It was a shallow well with a lid on it about 36" in diameter.
Pulled back the lid and the water level was so low it was below the well pipe.
Brought in a water tank to fill it up and the earth took it all. I knew it was crap shoot but had to try it.

Your well pump motor could have taken a dump....or your air tank might have an issue.

What kind of well?
An artesian well is free flowing because it is driven by hydrostatic head (the water source is higher in elevation than the outlet point).
If you were to pump an artesian well at a rate faster than it flows, you might temporarily deplete the water near the outlet but if you stop pumping the well will in time resume flowing.
Only if the upstream source dries up will the well stop flowing.
A shallow well ( less than 25 feet deep ) has the pump above ground. The reason less than 25 feet is due to physics water boils at 212 F at sea level pressure.. Water boils at room temp with enough vacume. The amount of vacume needed to PULL water from 25 feet deep will boil water hence the air in the water from a tap when the water is at 25 feet from the pump suction.
One way to get around this is to digg a hole a few feet deep and put the pump in the hole thus removing a few feet of lift ,to stop the water from boiling in the pipe.

Could be a couple things that aren't as bad as having to sink your well deeper. You might have a crack in the pipe or a problem with your pressure tank. Doing what Aps said would tell you how far down the water was, but unless you know how deep the pump is it won't be much help.
