I recently had an American Express credit card stolen. They were very unresponsive to police requests for information.

No, but i was the victim of the theft of a lot of camera gear. :

No but i also was the victim of credit card theft, credit card was stolen out of the mailbox. It was a gas credit card and at the time no activation necessary. Contacted the credit card co. and proved by my past usage that it wasn't me racking up all these new charges in Wash. DC and Va. and they cleared the charges off odf my bill and turned it over to their security people and issued me a new acct. # and card.

Twice someone has accessed two different debit cards in my name in less than a year and made fraudulent charges on them. Thank God my bank is on top of things and caught them both as soon as they happened and called me immediately and stopped them from going through.
