What's the difference between a Koa and the 614?

Koa is a type of wood. Has that swirly wavy look. Also has a broad timbre range. Taylor decided to just name that model the Koa because the wood is so unique. It's one of their newer lines.

The 614 has the big leaf maple on the sides and back and sitka spruce on the top. This is also has a pretty broad range but is better for deeper sounds.

Well, all I know is I started strumming some chords and this thing just sung, but BIG.

Wow.

Then, I ripped a few scales and it played like an electric! I never enjoy playing notes on an acoustic! Fret board!!!!

Nothing to see here
...waiting for daughter to get done with some shopping, had time to kill, got groomed and still had time so, off to the local guitar emporium. It is a running joke with the owner and I as to where the lefty department was moved to. There isn't one. Very few lefties exist. In the universe.

So, in any event, he says "Well, I do have a lefty Taylor..." My heart stopped.

There it was, a pair of matched ash Taylor's, a righty and a...yes, by gawd, left hander, didn't get the model.

For any of you who may be heathens and not know what a Taylor is, whatever your hobby is, this is one of the best. Played it for about 5 minutes and made them take it away. My gawd. I'd never played one before and the fret board was just heaven, big, fat, wide, fairly flat, perfect, and it sounded of angels. Gave me goosebumps.

Wow.

:larry:

ooooh...I thought maybe you were in Australia..my bad

Here:

Now calm down. You're dealing with a Taylor fanatic.

That top looks like two woods. It's hard to tell with the lighting. But I can tell by looking at the sister guitar in the background (upper left).

The tips on the arch and cutaway look like spruce. The rest of the top is probably indian rosewood. It looks more brown than ash. Could just be the lighting.

So, when you gonna buy it? Maybe they'll give you a disability discount for being left-handed.

Maybe it is spruce? I'll check if you care that much.

You did notice it's twin. Matched set, $8,999. Who the hell wants an L and an R???

Didn't the top have two cuts of wood on it? From the lighting it's kind of hard to tell, but the other one in the background looked the same. A darker wood (rosewood) making up the majority of the top, with two pieces of spruce on the tips of the arch and cutaway. I just thought that was an odd design even for a custom. Taylor is far more focused on producing guitars with a certain sound rather than for cool looks. So I wonder what sort of sound this design would have produced. That's why I am interested in the woods.

The only reason I can think of for putting a leftie and rightie together like that is they knew there was a rich, leftie flower guy in the area they could easily target. Let me know when you record your first song on it.

Here; 301 662 8822 ask for Rick. He'll happily tell you the whole story. Tell him I was in there yesterday and told you about the guitars. He knows my face and my lefty-ness but will recall the name when you mention the lefty. As a Taylor fan, he'd be more than happy to chat with you about the details because he loves Bob Taylor and his company. He got to take a tour of the factory recently, meet everyone, etc.

:buddies:

I have to stay away because I can't be plunking down no $4,500 for no guitar no time soon! :larry:

Wet my pants in public today...

First impotence, now incontinence. I realize that Vrai goes for older men, I just didn't realize how much older.

Have you had your prostate checked? What's your PSA? Did they do a DRE?

Toppick has been looking for guys to give DRE's to. Send him a PM.

Awww man! You're taking all the fun out of this. But this'll learn ya to start a Taylor guitar thread.

Didn't mean to. You have questions. I have answers. Or, Rick does.

I play 'em. Not too much into the nuts and bolts of every last detail bu I appreciate those who are.

I called Rick. He said some guy came in wanting to check out the taylor up there. He didn't notice the wet spot until it was too late. But he said, after the photo shoot, the guy left in a big hurry. They're currently in the process of refinishing the guitar. It will be sold as a factory-second at a discount.
