What A Shame!

Nasty to see an animal in obvious pain like that.........I hope they can somehow avoid that.

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro broke down at the start and broke the hearts of racing fans as Bernardini went on to win the $1 million Preakness Stakes on Saturday.

Experts thought Barbaro had a good shot at winning the Triple Crown. :frown:

Did you hear the interviews after the race? What idiotic questions. The first thing she asked the winning jockey was about Barbiaro(sp?). Then a reporter asked a DVM if it was a life threatening injury. :deadhorse I'm no horse expert, but I really don't think they are going to put that horse down. Specially what he's worth as a stud.

I heard them talk the the primary Vet at the scene.

He said :"In general terms, I don't think he'll have to be put down".

But he also made it clear they won't know anything until they calm the animal down and X-ray it, to see what ligament/muscle damage has been done.

He mused that the horses' racing days are over, however.

Please remember this is a hind leg..the Jockey club only allows live covering of mares (NO artificial insemination and collection) Not saying they can't lie but I don't know many studs that can stand on one hind leg and breed a mare..It might be grim.

Yeah but, can't they put in a titanium rod like they do in humans?? I mean with all the amazing technology we have today, you would think they could do SOMETHING. If not, it is a sad situation. He looked so strong coming out of the gate and he was the only one who had a serious warmup. Sad day in the horsy world.

I was thinking along the same lines, but then again, you can't tell an animal - horse - whatever:

"Ok, you're going to have to take it easy for awhile; stay off that right hind leg for a few days", etc.

They don't speaka da lingo!

Dr. Larry Bramlage, attending veterinarian for the American Association of Equine Practitioners, said the strapping colt suffered a fracture above and below the ankle and would require “pretty major surgery” at the New Bolton Clinic at the University of Pennsylvania on Sunday. He said the injury could be life-threatening if there was significant damage to soft tissue that interrupted the blood supply to the lower limb.

Damn, that does not sound good.

They'll fix him up better than before. He is such a beautiful animal it'd be a shame to lose him. His escort horse before the race is a beauty too. :yay:

According to ESPN News this morning, Barbaro's days of racing are over. Now they're concentrating their efforts on saving his life.

Apparently, the fracture above the ankle occurred first, then the one below the ankle broke, as the jockey was trying to rein him in.

Something about insufficient blood flow to the entire leg; they'll never be able to reconstruct the vessels to the leg.

Very sad indeed. Only because of the horse's worth are they even attempting to save him for breeding purposes. Most other horses would have been euthanized already because of the severity of the injuries and the unlikeliness of it even being able to be healed. This is one of the very unfortunate things that can happen when racing horses.

My sister, who is into harness racing, usually goes to Harrington in Delaware on Monday nights but didn't this week. She's rather glad she didn't. Unfortunately, one of the drivers was killed in a freak accident and two other drivers badly injured. :frown:

Or worse....sent to the killers for a lousey 65 cents a lb and hauled days on a double decker trailer with a broken leg to get to the slaughter house...

I know. It's horrible. They're just a commodity and when they don't make money any more, they're discarded like yesterday's garbage. I remember the links you gave me months ago. The pictures absolutely broke my heart. :bawl:

What does your sister do with her horses when they can no longer race?

Tries to find some sucker...er, other horseman who thinks they still CAN race. Seriously, a couple she has turned into brood mares. Some have been sold to the Amish while others have been turned into pleasure horses. She often threatens to turn them into glue if they don't perform, but she could never do that.
