My son went to Town Creek Elementary for speech therapy when he was 3. That may be where they send you for your child. It was like 2 or 3 times a week we had to go. Worked wonders! :huggy:

:yeahthat:

He may qualify for "special Pre-K" too depending on how bad his speech is.

Has he ever had his hearing checked?

No but that's on my list. I am 90% deaf in my right ear. I am hoping he is not. I went through 3 surgeries and nothing worked. I have however notice that if i go to the left ear and speak to him i he understands me better. I am trying to get the doctor to check it. Right now i am waiting for someone to call me back from child find. he speaks with his tongue. Like hes biting it.Does that make sense.

Child Find will do a hearing test first thing, since that's the most obvious cause of any speech delay.

Thats good to know. I hope they can help. I try not to get frustrated because it is not his fault. He is smart. he just can say the word right. I know it makes him feel bad, He tells me hes sorry. It makes me want to cry.

Actually, since you have a hearing problem yourself, I'm surprised you've never been asked to have him tested.

When my 2nd and 3rd children were born 7 and 5 years ago, I remember being asked if there was any family history of hearing problems. My brother had some issues as a child that were resolved with surgery, so I said that. They also test children's hearing at birth and have done so for at least the last 5 years. After my 5-yr old was born, I got a letter from the health department telling me that although she'd passed the test given in the hospital, I may want to consider getting her tested again because of the family history.

My daughter has moderate hearing loss in both ears. She did well after getting hearing aids and recieving speech services thru school. She was released from her IEP this year and just has a 504 to follow her to middle school.

He was tested at birth and was fine. It was always an issue. The past doctors he had said its too early to tell. I am just being paranoid because i have an issue. It doesn't hurt to get it checked.

A couple people in my family think if he goes into speech classes now he will be branded in special ed classes the rest of his life. It's crazy. They are so worried about the stupid things. If there is an issue i rather have it fixed then to be embarrassed because my child is in a special class.

Glad to hear your son had sucess!

I didn't have much luck with the "Infants and Toddlers" program when my daughter was 2 and we lived in Golden Beach. She had been born with a partial cleft palate and the team at Children's directed me to seek out any services offered by our local school district. We had to drive to Banneker for speech services once a week. Then the speech therapist quit and we had a 2 month gap in services because they did not have a replacement. When we did resume therapy it was the Deaf Teacher working with her, not a speech therapist. Whats worse is that her hearing was never screened. Its was never even mentioned. When we moved and she enrolled in pre-K here in Calvert the school screened her hearing as part of her initial evaluation for speech services.

Pfft tell em to stuff it! Oh, and bring up that Mr. Voiceover James Earl Jones stuttered as a kid.

My daughter is in 5th grade and was never "branded" having speech pull-out from class. It's easier to address speech problems when they are younger.

As far as "too soon to tell" that is also a load. A 3 year old can sit in a sound booth or have STIM tests done. My daughter just dropped a block in a bucket when she heard the beeps. They can even use "invoked response" in really young kids (that requires sedation though, and you'd have to go thru Children's for that).

I hope he will sit still. But we will see. They are the professionals. They will find a way.

My son had such a bad speech impediment no one but me or his twin brother could understand him. He started speech therapy when he was 2 in Va. Bch and continued through elementary school here (pre-k on to 5th). He went to greenview knolls and the speech therapist there was awesome! I can't remember her name and I think shes retired now anyway. He gave a speech at his 5th gr graduation! It was an awesome feeling when he did that. John Hazuda was the principle at the time and even he congratulated my son. He told us when he 1st started there he couldn't understand a word my son said. And that he was proud of how well he spoke then. Lynn McGuffie! That was the speech therapist's name.!!

And don't forget this. His speech therapy is covered by a govt grant or something like it and the schools HAVE TO provide it to him.

Well, that's some brilliant logic on their part. :sarcasm:

What do they think is going to happen if he goes into kindergarten and can't speak properly? Chances are, the problem can be solved before then and he will be able to enter school on level with his peers. If you don't do something now, he will just get further and further behind and need to take that much longer to resolve any problems once he does get help.

I was born deaf and the military doctors kept telling my parents that I was just slow and that I wasn't deaf. Finally, at 3 years old, I wasn't talking at all and military doctors were concerned and got my hearing tested. It was confirmed that I have 85% of hearing loss in both ears at 3 years old. I remembered having hearing tests, fitting for hearing aids, wore the hearing aids, attending speech therapist classes. I've never once was branded into a Special Education classes or programs. I graduated from high school with a 4.0 GPA and was in National Honor Society.

I'm speaking very well for a deaf person who was born deaf. Anyone who met me in the forum can vouch that.

I also learned American Sign Language (ASL) along with learning English in writing, speaking, and reading.

I am getting him help. I just think they are stupid. It doesn't make me love him any less because of this. I know what's right for my child not them.

Wow. That is awesome. My parents never thought there was an issue with me. Just that i was stupid. But when i got checked and found out i was pretty much deaf in one ear. It pretty much made them feel stupid. But i was old enough i was to realize something was wrong and tried to help myself. I would turn to my good ear to listen to people and ask them to repeat themselves. I still have a hard time. But i just want to make sure he gets help early. I got teased a lot.
