What about speech problems

Wow. That is awesome. My parents never thought there was an issue with me. Just that i was stupid. But when i got checked and found out i was pretty much deaf in one ear. It pretty much made them feel stupid. But i was old enough i was to realize something was wrong and tried to help myself. I would turn to my good ear to listen to people and ask them to repeat themselves. I still have a hard time. But i just want to make sure he gets help early. I got teased a lot.

I'm sorry that your parents didn't treated you very well and get you a help you needed.

I got teased alot too because of my deafness and elementary kids did not understand, but when they got older, they understand and stopped the teasing. Just rememeber when your child is getting teased in school, his peers are too young to understand and it takes time for them to grow up and understand. :huggy:

Have you ever try for hearing aid in your bad ear to help you with "hearing"? Also, did you ever learned American Sign Language? I learned, so I could have an interpreter in the classrooms at my school to help with communication and my education. I could NOT lip read in the classroom setting.

If your child's hearing have been tested and he have some hearing loss, please get your child to wear hearing aids and learn American Sign Language. It is good to have an interpreter in the classroom to help with communication and education, so your child wouldn't feel overwhelm with lip reading and "crash" because it had gotten too hard to keep up. Also, not everybody's lips are "readable".

I used to have one but it bothered me a lot.I cant stick anything in my ear or it hurts really bad. I had the bone behind my ear replaced. So even when i wear glasses for long period of time it hurts. I used to know sign language. I just figured now most of the time what people are saying isn't worth hearing anyway...lol! I am looking new things to try. But i am so used it doesn't bother me all that much. But when it comes to my kids I am all about getting the help and services they need.

Talk to your pediatritian. I would get a dentist to check him but sounds like his tongue is stuck, they may have to snip it.(My frind daughter had that and her speech problem was solved.) i would try to see an Ear specialist to determine if he can hear from both his ears.

redhotmama,
Do not worry. Speech problems are correctable and do not always indicate hearing loss.
Calling Child Find and taking advantage of the services offered through the school system is a good start and provides extra help, but supplement these services with private therapy for best results. Pediatricians tend to drag their feet on speech issues taking a wait and see attitude, but I would persue having the child evalauted by both Child Find and a private therapist if I were you. If your child attends pre-school, maybe the school can recommend a therapist. When choosing a therapist, make sure she has Maryland state license and certification. Choose someone who has experience with young children. Also look into your health insurance, speech therapy is covered by most policies. If youi have any further questions, feel free to send me a PM.

EXCELLENT Advice!!!!!

The speech therapists I had were certificated, had state license, and teaching degree to work with small children. They are reason why I could speak very well for a deaf person who was born deaf. Also, my parents were/are an excellent parents because they helped me to work on my speech, my education, etc. Without them, I wouldn't be here being able to speak or have an excellent education.
