What are entitlements?

Entitlement - a program that the government uses to cater to those that don't work for what they are receiving, i.e. free healthcare, welfare, etc., and feel they are entitled to this just because they are alive and living in America.

Social Security and Medicare are sometimes called "entitlements," because people meeting relevant eligibility requirements are legally entitled to benefits.

Why is SS considered an entitlement when I've been paying SS tax for 40 years?

Entitlements are generally considered a negative concept when people are suddenly legally entitled to something for which they gain more than they provide - like SS, Medicare and Medicaid, etc.

When people do not provide for themselves as a result of their time or talent, but instead expect (feel entitled to) someone else providing for them, that's when an entitlement becomes a negative.

The redistribution of wealth is a great idea to those receiving. Try and take it back from them like it was taken from those who earned it, though, and you will see a whole different attitude.

why so serious
I think "entitlements" is a buzzword that some people use to demonize people for whatever reason.
Personally I would be happy to write SS off as a loss if it meant my pockets might not continue to be raped. People pay into SS yet get more out of it eventually because they put less into it than they received. So many claim to hate socialism but line up hand out for SS. Hypocrisy.

havoc is havoc
Leave Medicare and SS out of this for a minute. The entitled class are those who one pay no taxes, or two get back every penny that was withheld from their pay checks. They contribute nothing to the national debt, or the current budget. Yet they have alot to say about how our tax money should be spent so that it betters them. I am just saying that if you don't contribute to the pool of money then you shouldn't swim in it. What if come election time if everyone had to show proof of taxes instead of a voter registration card to be able to vote. I just feel that there are fewer and fewer people paying taxes and a metric butt-ton reaping the benefits and we all have the same voice come election day.

This is not the dictionary definition. If these entitlement programs did not exist, these people would either starve to death or have to get off their azzez and actually get a job. The entitled seem to feel it's owed to them. This does not apply to all of the entitled group. Some actually work and just can't make ends meet on their salary. They have kids to support. I know people that need these programs and are still willing to work and I really don't consider these folks are part of the entitled group.

BRAVO!!!

JESUS helped people, but he never created a welfare program

I can't figure out why that is. Americans obviously love socialism. That's why regulate commerce, have a welfare state and a progressive income tax.

Are you trying to suggest that you are personally against each and every regulatio on commerce, each and every entitlement to citizens, and anything other than an exact equal tax? Would you make it an equal amount, or an equal percentage?
