What are the rules around burying pets in public?

I seriously don't think I see myself calling to ask permission, but it may take some time to dig the hole. It is in a remote area and I don't think I should have a problem but who knows. What would happen if I got caught?

I sincerely hope there are no rules...if so, the Otter family is in BIG trouble.

Sorry about your loss.

Well, he is getting close, too, but it is Colby, the black lab. He is still with us but his time is coming soon. He feel ill quickly with cancer and a blood clot. I know he is getting close because he quit eating his favorite treats this morning...

What do you mean, in public? Like on public property?

So would we. We have 5 animals in our yard so far. Growing up, my parent's backyard was so full of grave sites that once we accidentally dug up one of our cats. :twitch:

Yeah, he is the best of the gang, that is for sure! Hate to see him go but I owe it to him to not have him suffer. Soooo many good memories!!

Only 5? We have one ewe, one lamb, a doe (not our pet), 4 dogs, 2 guinea pigs, three small kittens, and five cats...but we've been at our place for almost 21 years.

You don't want to bury him at home? Just curious.

I could...I'm still torn. That is what hubby wants to do (he's afraid of getting caught). It is just that he loved the beach and there is this area of woods, which is rather high up near the water. I *think* I could dig deep enough that I wouldn't hit the water table... but if I do this, I know I'll be digging solo b/c hubby won't help. Home = Hubby + Shovel. Hmmph.

Thanks for everyones kind words. This is truly the hardest responsibility as a pet owner.

Oh, I see. :huggy: Have you thought about cremation? You could (secretly) spread some ashes in the water.

My dog is 13, and when the time comes I'll have him cremated. They have little lockets you can put some ashes in and wear them. They're pretty little lockets, and it'd be nice to have him with me all the time. Is that weird? I hope not.

So far...

We have 4 ferrets and one cat. We would have buried our Dalmatian but he was cremated instead because our ground is hard and it would have taken alot of time and effort to dig a big enough hole (and deep enough). We currently have 3 live animals that will also take up space in the yard. I'm sure the kids will have other pets before they move out (they are only 8 and 5 now).

We've live here for 12yrs. If my kids are anything like my brother, sister and I were as kids, we'll end up with tons of little graves by the time we move away in about 15 yrs.

:yeahthat: I have had both of mine cremated and some of them in pendants! People have no clue... unless I tell them. This way they are with me all the time!
this is where I got my pendants... Lin is great and caring

I would opt to cremation and spread the ashes... no chance of him washing away or another animal digging him up. But I do think there is something against burying animals on the property. (not like we abide by it or they check up on you)

hope this help out some
Q: Are there rules about scattering a pet's ashes?
A: Present Maryland law is that it is illegal to scatter ashes anywhere in Maryland other than onto private property and then only with the specific permission of the property owner to do it.
Q: Can I bury my pet's uncremated body on my property?
A: Generally, yes you can. This however is subject to what may be set out in local county or city ordinances and in covenants that affect your property. There is a Maryland State law that says that you must dig the pet's grave deep enough so that you are able to place at least three feet of covering dirt on what you bury. So the grave would have to be dug to four feet deep.
Q. Can pets be buried in people cemeteries? Can people be buried in pet cemeteries?

A: Virtually no people cemeteries will bury a pet next to a person and almost all people cemeteries have rules that prohibit the burial of pets anywhere in their cemetery. A few people cemeteries have a separate section for pet burial. Present Maryland law generally prohibits people from being buried in pet cemeteries.

Well, I gave it a shot. I was happy when I got past the roots, but then I hit clay. I was only able to go about 18". It would take hours if I was ever even able to get it further down. I have seen some shady characters in da Park and thought, hmmm, wonder if I could pay one of them $50 to dig it for me. Maybe I just need to go the cremation route. Do they just do your own pet? I don't want a mix of Colby, Fluffy, Snoop, Felix and Petunia.

with my two after I had them PTS.... I took them over to Mattingly Gardiner Funeral Home in Leonardtown and they sent them out for cremation

give them a call..... why not send them somewhere you would send your family!! thats my thought.

They were so caring and compassionate... even though they were pets.
