....of the new dollar coin?

WASHINGTON - Maybe Susan B. Anthony and Sacagawea should not take public rejection personally. It's not easy overcoming people's indifference to dollar coins, even those honoring such historic figures.

An AP-Ipsos poll found that three-fourths of people surveyed oppose replacing the dollar bill, featuring George Washington, with a dollar coin. People are split evenly on the idea of having both a dollar bill and a dollar coin.

They need to stop producing dollar bills, and maybe even 5 dollar bills and go to coin. The savings would be substantial.

Me too. Way too heavy. I always dump my change at the end of the day. Every few weeks I roll it and take it to the bank.

Not practical. Everyone has one's and 5's on them. Who needs to carry around a pocket full of that stuff.

I keep reading all about the wisdom of a dollar coin, and generally I agree with it. But it has two major problems...

Every damned time they make one of these, there's not a vending machine on the planet that will take them! I don't mind a couple of these jingling in my pocket, but I'm simply better off carrying four quarters than these useless items. Can't be used in a machine, in a meter, at the Metro - nothing. What's the point?

The second is - virtually everywhere in the world where a coin has replaced currency - they have REMOVED the currency equivalent. There's no need to adjust to the coin as long as the dollar bill is around.

As far as I can tell, they're divided over the use of a dollar coin; one side wants us to adopt it, but no one else wants to lose the bill.

I had one of those large plastic jugs that pretzels come in full of change. When cashed in, I got over $600.00. :faint:

Now I have a 5 gallon water jug that I'm filling.

There was talk of doing the dollar coins like the quarters because the government actually made money off the quarters.

Well, exactly. If you had no one's, you'd have a couple of these in your pocket. And you'd still have the five.

I think part of the problem is where our currency fits into the cost of things. In some countries, the currency is the ruble, or the zloty, or the yen or lira - and you gotta spend a thousand of them to get anything.

Isn't that the Presidential thing? Presidents on dollars? Let me double check - I thought they were planning the same thing, with dollar coins, starting with Washington and going through them all.

Just imagine having a genuine Clinton in your pocket!

paper money (especially a dollar bill) life expectancy is about a year.. which means every year the mint has to suck up the cost of replacing the bills they made last year PLUS the new currency... A coin's life expectancy is about 10 years, or more.. Little higher up front costs, but it last 10 - 20 times longer.

Get rid of the bills, stop making them, replace them with coins. The vending machine companies will catch on, or go under.

I've lived where I'd say 80% of the currency I was carrying was in coin.. had very little in the way of bills in my pocket. You adjust, and these days, with the ATM's, it's rare I have more then a few dollars in my pocket anymore anyways. Now if vending machines would take ATM's, I'd be cash free.

Yeah, that's what I heard. Don't know when or if they are starting it, I think Congress has to vote on it.

It gets worse. They're planning a "First Spouse" program for 10 dollar gold coins. They won't be in general circulation, but you will be able to get a coin with good ol' Hillary on it.

If they make another dollar coin it will go the same way the $2 bill went, the Susan B. Anthony, the Silver dollar, etc. Do you see many of those around anymore? It won't be a spendable currency.

They're committed to this program at least until it complete. Four Presidents a year up until Reagan - so, 10 years. Even Susan B Anthony dollars didn't last that long.

(The thing that REALLY sank the SBA dollars was that they were EXACTLY the same size as a quarter, but had those weird sides. What a dopey idea).
