What is your view on the National Retail Tax?

I agree with you in theory. But groceries are one of the largest contributers to our GDP. If you didn't tax these the "National Retail Tax" would have to be extremely high on other goods.
That's fine with me. Groceries/medicine/stuff like that are necessities. The "other goods" are not. The more non-necessary things you buy, the more you pay in taxes. Makes sense to me.

They suggesting to make it 15% across the board, not 2%.

The figure I'm hearing is 23%... however, an analysis of Sen. DeMint's proposal suggested consumer prices would drop an average of 22% in the first year, because we'd get rid of complex compliance costs. The reason: contrary to myth, corporate income taxes and their compliance costs are paid by consumers, not by rich people.

Help me out here....

How does this affect a shopping spree? Do I have to buy plain white undies, or can I still shop at VS? Clothing is essential, right? Will I pay a luxury tax for my Levi's, but not for Wal-Mart jeans?

But then you would also have to define what are essential goods, do you see the administrative, and bureaucratic mess this would create?

No, but do you see the loophole that they could use? Their income isn't taxed until it is consumed. :peace:
I don't see that as a loophole. It's more of a deferred tax, but that's the same for everyone. You can save it for retirement or if you enjoy looking at a bunch of numbers on your bank statement, or you can spend it on something you want. When you spend it, it gets taxed. It's not like that money goes into a black hole.

I'm just curious as to what you guys think about this issue. Bush is for it, so I'm assuming that most of you without thoughts of your own will side with him on this issue.

I support the idea and was, in fact, discussing at great length with others when George H. W. Bush was in office.

Bush if for it, so I'm assuming that you, without thoughts of your own, blindly oppose him on this issue.

Actually, we already have this for state sales taxes. Some food items (not sure if there is anything else) are not taxed. Have you noticed a "administrative, and bureaucratic mess"? I haven't.

I think Bush only said it was worth considering... he'll probably propose a flat income tax with a large personal exemption.

Interesting. A National sales tax with no income tax. It has possibilities, but it will never get past congress.

There are too many loopholes favoring too many special interests on both sides of the aisle. Imagine the number of jobs lost for accountants, tax lawyers and the like. These people have powerful (and rich) lobbies that would make this a hard fight.

The economy could absorb the job losses in my opinion because the costs of some items would indeed go down, spurring growth and hiring people as they change jobs from one career to another.

I'll take a wait and see approach on this. I need more details before I can decide.

UP, you're stupid anyway. :howdy:

Actually the funny thing is I'm not against it. But I don't agree with it entirely. I'm not discussing what I don't agree in. I will just counter arguments as needed.

I have. It's called our IRS, and it's a pretty big mess. (I know state sales taxes are not collected by the IRS, I'm just stating that the IRS is an Administrative mess)

You were asking why people call you names here. It's because you make insulting statements like that. You seem to assume that all Republicans here are sheep, blindly following Bush no matter what his position is. If someone said that about you and Kerry, you would be upset, and rightly so.

So what? Do you honestly think people makes wads of money, then stuff it under a mattress and only bring it out to fling it on the floor and roll in it? The more someone makes, the more they will spend. THAT is a fact.
