If you use a liner in a litter box, you just grab the ends and you are done. With cages, there is crap everywhere, and there have been times I have had to take the cages apart to get them clean, crap in the food bowls on the toys inside, yuck.

I never thought it was that bad. But then, I cleaned the cages every day, changed the water 2 or 3 times a day, and my birds spent a lot of time out of the cages, as well.

Yeah 1/2 of it will be on the floor. I have one now that I have never tried before, he jumps in the center of it because it has these walls around the side. I just think cages are gross and nasty to clean out, and then there is always crap outside of the cage too.

Maybe I just had mini-pigs with cute costumes.

I'm a cat person. They don't bite. Or bark incessantly. Or roll in poop. Or need walking in rain and sub-zero weather. Plus if you travel at all, they're a lot easier to leave. You just get a neighbor to come in once a day to feed and scoop. Can't do that with a dog.

I also like hamsters. My daughter got some for Christmas one year and quickly lost interest in them. So I brought them to the office with me and they kept me company during the day. Mac and Cheese. They were so cute! We went on vacation and I left them with a neighbor, whose daughter got attached and wouldn't give them back.

I had hamsters too. I had a habitrail set up around two sides of the room and they each had their own "side". That was until my b/f taught my 3 y/o neighbor how to play "earthquake" with it and it fell apart and they got loose in the house. :lmao:

I've grown very fond of my guinea pig. He has so much personality. I pretty much just let him out every evening and give him free reign of the couch. Then there's Spracket the chinchilla, who LOVES his roly ball. He gets in there and cruises all over the place. But I wouldn't recommend either for kids, they aren't really built for big hugs or rough housing with. :twitch:

We used to play Bowling for Hamsters with mine. My dog would also push them around the house in their roly balls. :lmao:

That was a great idea, taking the hamsters to work. Right now, I think we may be getting evicted soon from our office, but once I find out for sure, I have a 10-gallon fish stand and I was thinking of getting a tank and fish for the office.

I have a 15 gallon tank complete with all the crap you need. You can have it.

Emmett, my cockatiel, would differ with you.

In all fairness, I have a severe dislike for birds due to personal experiences with being bitten by a cockatiel. I just don't trust birds as pets, and dislike the high maintenance of keeping a clean cage, etc...

I'm sure Emmett would disagree. However, the beerwench wanted a pet and later said she has 2 kids and they need a pet. Kids need the warmth of a cat or a dog. I referenced being able to fall asleep on the couch with their pet cuddled next to or on top of them is just part of being a kid. Having a dog for that is amazing, and brings back fond childhood memories. As an adult, having a cat for similar companionship is my best alternative, and a balance between maintenance and companionship.

I wouldn't recommend a bird for 2 kids, and based on my experience I think a dog or cat would be far better for them...

PS. For everyone who thinks a litter box is high maintenance, buy a Littermaid. It might seem a little steep in price initially, but I've had one for 2-1/2 years. Changing a waste recepticle and cleaning a "clean" Littermaid box every week is far better than scooping and cleaning a regular litter box every day or two.
